BOOK FIESTA IN SANTA FE — NO COST TO PARTICIPATE!!!

The New Mexico Book Co-op and Clear Light Publishers in Santa Fe are banding together to organize two special book selling opportunities in Santa Fe.

Clear Light Publishers has graciously offered to host two events in Santa Fe at their new Clear Light Book Gallery on West San Mateo for the Book Awards Winners & Finalists and a book Fiesta for everyone. Please read rules carefully; space is limited so act fast. Clear Light Book Gallery is located at 851 West San Mateo (next to Open Hands). They have 3,000 square feet of display space available for us.

JANUARY 31, 2009 -- Winners & Finalists Book Fiesta
On January 31, 2009, there will be an event for Winners & Finalists in the 2008 Book Awards.

FEBRUARY 21, 2009 — Book Fiesta for Everyone
On February 21, 2009, they will have a Book Fiesta for anyone.

FREE, but you must help in promotion. There will be no cost to participate in either event. If you wish to participate you must send the email addresses of at least 25 of your potential customers (who might come to the events) in the Santa Fe area (40 email addresses if you want to participate in both events) and send these addresses to info@nmbookcoop.com. The New Mexico Book Co-op will handle the publicity for the events and will send out email announcements to people to encourage people to attend.

The events will be 10am-4pm and you are asked to be there by 9:30am to set up. No tear-down is allowed before 4pm. Each participant will have 1/2 of a table (two people to a table); if you have more than 10 titles, arrangements can be made for a larger space. A participant may bring other books as well Participation will be on a first-come basis, until space is gone. Tables will be provided for both events. You don’t have to bring tables. Participants get 75% of all book sales; 25% will go to Clear Light for handling all sales. Clear Light will handle the cash register and credit card processing. Checks for sales will be sent out a week after the event. Books must be marked with price (we highly advise removable labels that are available at stores like Staples and Office Max).

ANOTHER BOOK DISPLAY OPPORTUNITY
Clear Light Book Gallery has just re-opened in its new location on San Mateo Street in Santa Fe and is interested in having a display of New Mexico books from the Book Award Winners and from the recent New Mexico Book Catalog. They cannot guarantee sales so they want a single copy of each winner and catalog book to display on a consignment basis. If they get interested buyers, they will order more from you. Clear Light Book Gallery features children’s books, cookbooks, Native American, Hispanic, Southwest & Holistic books, and Southwest gift items. If you are interested in participating in this display please contact Harmon Houghton at 505/989-9590.

Write On Author Sandi Ault Wins Award

On December 9, 2008 Library Journal named Sandi Ault's WILD INFERNO one of its Best Books of the Year, the second Best of 2008 list on which the novel has placed. WILD INFERNO was one of only five mysteries that made the prestigious list. Founded in 1876, LP is a premier trade journal for librarians and has the highest circulation of any librarianship journal. Its “Library Journal Book Review” publishes prepublication and new book reviews. LJ together with the other major insider publication, Publishers Weekly, gave WILD INFERNO a pair of starred reviews. In November, 2008 PW placed WILD INFERNO on its Best Books of the Year list and listed it as one of only nine in the mystery genre.

Ault also received starred reviews from both for her first novel, WILD INDIGO, which received critical acclaim with the media as well as the prestigious Mary Higgins Clark – Edgar award, which was the first time a debut novel had received this award.

WILD INFERNO is Ms. Ault’s second addition to the WILD mystery series, which again features rough and ready Bureau of Land Management agent Jamaica Wild and her memorable pet wolf, Mountain. The setting of this second book is in the midst of a blazing wildfire while Native Americans are performing sacred ceremony at Chimney Rock. Jamaica’s task is to keep them safe while her life is threatened both by man and fire. Now listed as one of the Best Books of the Year for 2008 by both Library Journal and Publishers Weekly, it is a must read. Both books are published by Berkley Prime Crime/Penguin USA and are available at booksellers everywhere.

WATCH for Ms. Ault’s newest release WILD SORROW on March 3, 2009.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sandi Ault writes, researches, and explores the Southwest; and teaches WILD Writing Workshops. She is a former Type 2 Fire Information Officer and responded locally and nationally to wildfires. In her preparations for the WILD books, Sandi spent years studying Pueblo Indian customs, rituals, and ceremonies, and sharing life with a Pueblo family. Sandi and her husband live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with their wolf Tiwa and their cat Buckskin. Visit her on the web at www.sandiault.com

Melody Groves, winner of the 2008 New Mexico Book Award for her novel, Arizona War, signs her books at Borders Books, 10420 Coors NW, Albuquerque, on December 13, noon-2pm.

Set in 1861, Arizona War (La Frontera Publishing, 2008) brings alive frontier history when the Civil War reached deep inside the American Southwest. Writing Contest for New Mexico Writers

LAS CRUCES - An outstanding New Mexican writer will be honored for her work in non-fiction next spring when her book receives the prestigious Zia Award. Given each year by the New Mexico Press Women at their annual spring conference, women
writers living in the state are invited to submit their books for consideration for the award. The 2009 Zia Award will be given to the author of a non-fiction book published in 2006, 2007 or 2008. Some suggested non-fiction categories include general, essay, biography, autobiography, history, cookbook, humor, instructional, religious or inspirational, or photography. Each year the award rotates to one of three categories: non-fiction, fiction and children's literature. To accommodate this schedule, a book published in the last three years is eligible. Submissions can be made by the author or by someone else on behalf of the author, such as a publisher. Membership in the association is not required, but the writer must be a woman. Authors must also live in the state or have a strong connection to New Mexico; however the book can be published anywhere. A $10 submission fee is required and helps to defray the costs of the award. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 10, 2009. The 2008 Zia Award went to Anne Weaver for her children's book titled The Voyage of the Beetle. The 2010 Zia Award will be designated for fiction. The Zia Award was started by members in 1953 to honor an outstanding woman in New Mexico media. The New Mexico Press Women is the state chapter affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women and exists to provide professional development, networking and First Amendment right protection to professional journalists and communicators. For More information on the association please visit the website at: www.NewMexicoPressWomen.org.

Book entries are considered a donation to the organization and are not returned. The books will be part of the silent auction held at the annual spring awards banquet to raise scholarship funds. To submit a book entry to the Zia Award contest please send a cover letter containing contact information and a paragraph stating the author's connection to New Mexico, along with the book and a check for $10 payable to New Mexico Press Women to the following address postmarked by Jan. 10, 2009:

Rio Grande Books is pleased to announce the release of the second volume in the New Mexico: A Biographical Dictionary series. A multi-volume encyclopedia of the people of New Mexico—the 47th State in the Union, the book is a cross-section of people who have had an influence on life—and sometimes death—in the Land of Enchantment, from the time the first Europeans arrived around 1540 until 1980.

Volume I included over 600 entries and Volume II includes another 400 entries as well as a Historical Timeline of New Mexico’s history.

The series has received eight awards, including Finalist, 2008 New Mexico Book Awards, Winner, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Finalist-Historical Biography, 2007 National Best Books Award, Finalist-Reference, 2007 INDIE Excellence Book Awards, and Bronze Medalist-Reference Book, 2007 IPPY Book Awards.

AUTHOR INFO: Don Bullis is the author of five non-fiction books and two novels, including “The Old West Trivia Book” (1993), “New Mexico’s Finest: Peace Officers Killed in the Line of Duty, 1847-1999” (1999), “Bloodville” (2002) “99 New Mexicans …and a few other folks” (2005), and “Bull’s Eye” (2006) “New Mexico: A Biographical Dictionary 1540-1980, Volume I” has received seven (7) awards/honors, including Winner-New Mexico, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Winner-Nonfiction/Biography, 2007 New Mexico Press Women Awards, Finalist-Historical Biography, 2007 National Best Books Awards, Finalist-Reference, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Finalist-Reference, 2007 INDIE Excellence Book Awards, Bronze Medalist-Reference Book, 2007 IPPY Book Awards, and Notable Book, 2007 Southwest Books of the Year, Tucson-Pima Library System. Don Bullis is the Sheriff (president) of the Albuquerque Corral of Westerners International; member of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society of New Mexico; and a member of the Western History Association, Western Writers of America, the Albuquerque Historical Society, the Sandoval County Historical Society, the Corrales Historical Society, and the Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang. A graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, he lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

RAVE REVIEWS FOR THIS AWARD-WINNING SERIES:
“At last a dictionary I can read without being accused of spending time at a pursuit my wife finds laughable. I infrequently open a tattered Random House unbridged dictionary, flip through the pages, look up words strange to me and learn their definitions. Don Bullis has come to the rescue.” — Albuquerque Journal

“An entertaining book featuring a panoply of interesting people—some famous, some infamous, some obscure. But it is not just fun to read. It’s well researched. With sources, an extensive bibliography, and names indexed both alphabetically and grouped by exploits, the book is a useful reference tool that belongs on the shelves of southwestern writers, historians, genealogists, and anyone else who has an interest in the Land of Enchantment. — abqArts Magazine

“Bullis is well-known for his knowledge of New Mexico history. Indexed and annotated to serve as a research tool, this book is equally interesting to those interested in dipping into New Mexico’s unique history.” — POSH New Mexico Magazine

“For regional readers, this is a keeper.”— El Paso Times

Living & Dying With Parkinson’s Disease by Jane Kriete Awalt 202 pages
ISBN 978-1-890689-33-9 (17.95) ISBN 978-1-890689-59-9 (32.95)

BOOK DEALS WITH LIVING WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Jane Kriete Awalt, a resident of Oak Crest in Parkville, Maryland, is the author of a new book “The Stranger Comes At Sundown: Living & Dying With Parkinson’s Disease,” which was released in May. The book is a journal of Mrs. Awalt caring for her husband Bob, who died of Parkinson’s Disease in August, 2007. Bob Awalt was a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University (1943) and on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University from 1970 to 1990. The book is published by Rio Grande Books in Los Ranchos, New Mexico. The book is Awalt’s first. Awalt, a spry 83 years old, has already spoken to many care groups and support groups. She was also profiled in the Oak Crest resident newspaper “Village Voice.”

A personal journal of one family’s struggle with the progression of Parkinson’s disease — one can understand the medicine and the treatment for this devastating disease, but nothing prepares one for living & dying with Parkinson’s; this journal takes the reader by the hand as this disease takes control of one man’s life. More than 1,000,000 people in the United States are living, struggling, and dying with Parkinson’s Disease — 50,000 more are diagnosed in this country every year. Jane Awalt shares her personal journal of living and dying with her husband’s disease as a gift to others, helping us understand the stages and progression of this devasting illness. Bob’s story unfolds slowly like the disease, often taking startling turns and twists.

A must for caregivers and the families of Parkinson’s patients.

Proceeds from the book are being donated to

For most of the last two years of her husband’s fifteen-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Awalt kept a journal. As a primary caregiver, she brings the reader into her concerns: Will he wander away from the apartment during the night? Will he manage to reach the toilet or will she have another major cleanup chore? Will she be able to get him back into his bed when he falls out? Over and over, she gives thanks for the washer and dryer in the apartment. Over and over we hear about that Stranger who comes, frequently at sundown, to take over her husband’s personality, a Stranger who begins to act out violently. During the final three months, when she knows she can no longer continue to care for him herself, Awalt goes daily to spend hours with him at the Medical Center. This part of her journal kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. Written for other caregivers, Awalt makes her case clear for better communication between doctor and family members. She spells out flags to watch for in other Parkinson’s patients. One wonders what her husband’s last days would have been like without her presence in the Medical Center, in spite of the good care and extremely high costs of his treatment. Several unclear passages might have been reworked. Some of the repetitiveness could have been eased. But for all that, an insightful read. -- www.readingnewmexico.com

I highly recommend this book for anyone in any type of caregiver situation. I cried like baby after finishing The Stranger Comes At Sundown. Jane Awalt keeps a personal diary of the final few years of her husband’s life. Both are in their 80’s, yet their courage and attitude are amazing. Most of all, it is a legacy of care, love and support as this couple goes through the end of life together. For those dealing with a relative who has Parkinson’s disease this is a must read. It gave me a much better idea of what my parent’s both went through in my dad’s final years...and a hope that progress will be made in dealing with Parkinson’s. — Steve Stucker, KOB-TV (4) Albuquerque

In his June presentation to SWW, internationally accredited speaker and facilitator Ron Chapman (a former long-time Albuquerque resident and radio host at KUNM-FM), explored writer's inner obstructions to success. Now in "The Write Answers" he'll offer his unique expertise in a facilitated trouble shooting session that not only provides information on the challenges writers' face both in the writing process and in the publishing industry, but provides interactive opportunities for each participant to tackle their personal barriers to success.
Participants should bring several questions about what they perceive to be obstacles or their "stuckness," and explore what they perceive as a limitation or obstacle and Ron will help you see the opportunity within. From his own journey as a writer and author (and through the scores of interviews he conducted with New York Times best-selling and emerging local authors on KUNM-FM) and by working with small presses and trying to get name and book recognition, Ron knows where you've been and how to move beyond limited thinking.
An internationally recognized and accredited speaker and consultant, Ron Chapman nurtures creative thought and action while facilitating personal and professional growth and organization and leadership development, assisting clients in deepening their awareness, changing their perceptions, and cultivating insight and understanding to allow any challenge or problem to be overcome. A self-described full-time, all-time student of human, organizational, and cultural dynamics, Chapman, through his company, Magnetic North LLC, travels throughout the United States, Europe and recently, Zimbabwe, Africa, delivering powerful keynote addresses and conducting Seeing True seminars and workshops. Author of Seeing True: Ninety Contemplations in Ninety Days, What a Wonderful World and the Seeing True series of audio discs "The Way of Success in Leadership and "The Way of Spirit," Chapman is also a national award-winning social radio commentator.

“The Write Answers: Solutions for Authors and Authoring”
A SouthWest Writers Workshop with Ron Chapman

Date: Saturday, November 1st, 2008, 1 - 4pm
Location: The New Life Presbyterian Church, 5540 Eubank NE.
Cost: $20 members/ $30 non-members
Information: www.southwestwriters.org (click on “The Sage” link, page 9)

Title: The Write Answers: Solutions for Authors and Authoring
Workshop Description:
In his June presentation to SWW, former New Mexico resident and internationally accredited speaker and facilitator Ron Chapman explored our inner obstructions to success. Now in “The Write Answers: Solutions for Authors and Authoring,” he’ll offer his unique expertise in a facilitated trouble shooting session that not only provides information on our challenges as writers and during the writing process, but provides interactive opportunities for each participant to tackle their personal barriers to success.

Bring several questions about what you perceive to be obstacles or your stuckness. Explore what you perceive as a limitation or obstacle and Ron will help you see the opportunity within. Ron will take those questions or experiences and work with you to find real solutions. From his own journey as a writer and author and through working with small presses and trying to get name and book recognition, Ron knows where you’ve been and how to move beyond limited thinking.

About Ron Chapman:
An internationally recognized and accredited speaker and consultant, Chapman nurtures creative thought and action while facilitating personal and professional growth and organization and leadership development, assisting clients in deepening their awareness, changing their perceptions, and cultivating insight and understanding to allow any challenge or problem to be overcome. A self-described full-time, all-time student of human, organizational, and cultural dynamics, Chapman, through his company, Magnetic North LLC, travels throughout the United States, Europe and recently, Zimbabwe, Africa, delivering powerful keynote addresses and conducting Seeing True™ seminars and workshops. Author of Seeing True: Ninety Contemplations in Ninety Days and What a Wonderful World, and the Seeing True series of audio discs The Way of Success in Leadership and The Way of Spirit, Chapman is also a national award-winning social radio commentator.

New Mexico Authors and Publishers Showcase

New Mexico Publishers & Author Showcase
Catalog now viewable www.nmbook.org
(apologies, not .com, as previously written)
>> Our "New Mexico Publishers and Authors Showcase" tables at the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Trade Show in Colorado Springs effectively displayed nearly 100 titles to bookstore owners throughout our region. Working cooperatively with Paul Rhetts of the New Mexico Book Coop, Lisa Dale Norton, Jon Miller, Doris Baker, Carol Estes and Martha Egan of Papalote, Doug Bullis, and Randi Levin, we made many fine connections. Over 150 copies of the catalog went into the hands of trade show attendees, which included Hastings, a few reps from the other chains, and Bloomsbury Review!
The complete 2008-2009 Showcase Catalog is now viewable on our www.nmbook.org website. Sunflower Elliott has added a headlines feature to guide you to other important news in our statewide book and literary world.

Calendar of Events for Hal Simmons

MAGIC LANCE:
Mystery & Adventure in the New West, by Hal Simmons
Clear Light Publishing, ISBN 13: 978-1-57416-094-9 and ISBN 10: 1-57416-094-X, 320 pages, 5-1/2 x 8-1/2, $14.95,
September 2008

“In this mystery-adventure, Magic Lance author Hal Simmons presents a collision of forces: the dream of a casino-enriched Indian tribe to form a Native American state, and the dream of a small landowner named Lance Burnett to live the traditions of the West. The tribe’s land ambitions send hot signals all the way to Washington, D.C. Powerful politicians, a billionaire landholder, environmentalists and anti-gambling groups join the fray.
“Along the way, Lance Burnett is entranced with two beautiful women, one his wife, who wants to leave him, the other a sensual young ranch manager who wants to join him.
“Magic Lance is more than an exciting read. It’s an inside look at the complex worlds of tribal gambling casinos and Indian country land rights. Besides, it is beautifully written.”
—Tony Hillerman
