New Mexico Book CoOp Announces Authors to Sign at Holy Ghost School, Albuquerque

Beverly Eschberger is a member of KSJE FM's Write On Four Corners Family. She will be reading from her Elephants Visit London next fall. It's a wonderful book, the sort I would have loved as a kid. I had fun with it as an adult.

Ghost Catholic School (6201 Ross SE, Albuquerque) is hosting the Meet the Author Book Fair author event on Saturday, March 8, 2008, from 10am to 5 pm. The event is free and participants will have the opportunity to talk with authors, go to talks by authors, and buy books that appeal to children and adults. There will be ethnic foods and live entertainment.

Over three dozen local authors and publishers are scheduled to participate.

Below is the schedule for the talks/readings at the Holy Ghost School on March 8.

10:00 Bullis, Don – author, 99 New Mexicans, Bullseye, and NM Biographical Dictionary
Don will talk about several famous New Mexicans and their role in the history of the Land of Enchantment. He may also read from his novel Bulleye.

10:00 Gerson, Mark David – author, The MoonQuest and The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write
Mark will read an excerpt from The MoonQuest: A True Fantasy, talk about how he wrote and he will answer questions. The MoonQuest is a story about story, a "true fantasy" set in a time when stories are banned, storytellers banished and the moon's light extinguished. Here, one young bard must come out of hiding to embark on the long-prophesied journey to restore story to the land and light to the moon. It's a journey with no direction other than those offered by the stories that come to him unbidden...a journey that blurs the line between vision and reality. It's one of those stories, suitable for any age, that will be shared from the book. Mark will also answer questions about writing.

10:00 Jackson, Phil – author, A Spy Wears Two Hats
Phil will give a talk encouraging youngsters to use reading as a base for all their educational endeavors, followed by a brief question and answer period in reference to his book, A SPY WEARS TWO HATS; he may give a short reading as well.

11:00 Eschberger, Beverly – author, An Elephant Family Adventure: The Elephants Visit London
Beverly will do a reading from her book. (Appropriate for children ages 7 to 10 (or younger)

11:00 Davis, Jerry – author, Home on the Farm: Essays on a Michigan Childhood; Tales of the Road: Essays on a Half Century of Travel; Leafing Through My Family Tree
Jerry will give a short talk about how he happened to write his three books and a little about the process that was involved. He will also read several amusing and poignant chapters plus display and discuss some of the matted and framed illustrations from the books.

11:00 Bartlit, Nancy – author, Silent Voices of World War II: When Sons of the Land of Enchantment Met Sons of the Land of the Rising Sun
Nancy Bartlit's unique talk with archival images will reveal ironies during World War II when New Mexican and Japanese males met, either behind barbed wire or at the end of a gun. Bartlit explains the interconnections of the New Mexico National Guardsmen resisting Japanese attacks in the Philippines, and the young Navajo men whose innovative, rapid code hid military secrets that assisted capture of Pacific Islands. As these veterans fought in the Pacific, European, British, and Canadian scientists joined the U.S. Military in Los Alamos in a secret race to develop an atomic bomb. Meanwhile, in the shadow of Los Alamos, an internment camp for Japanese American elderly males was established, despite their sons fighting for the U.S. In Europe and Asia.

12:00 Ruehle, Marylee
Marylee will be reading a story of her toddler's reaction to the narration of a music CD.

12:00 Chris Eboch, author of The Well of Sacrifice and other books
Writing for Children
Remember the magic of bedtime stories? When you write for children, you have the most appreciative audience in the world. But to reach that audience, you need to understand the business of writing for children, including the requirements for different genres, the age ranges, and markets. You also need to write fresh, dynamic stories, whether you're writing short stories, articles, picture books or novels. Bring your questions. Chris Eboch is the author of nine books for children, a teacher through the Institute of Children's Literature, and the New Mexico regional advisor for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

12:00 Hudnall, Ken – author of the Spirit of the Border series
Ken will talk about several of his new books.

1:00 Lane, Jill – author of Hello Cinder, Oso Bear Visits the Symphony, Cinder Bear & the Christmas Train
Jill will do a reading from her new book Hello Cinder.

1:00 Petals & Pages Press & Hank Bruce – Author Of Global Gardening, Gardens For The Senses, Peace Beyond All Fear: A Tribute to John Denver’s Vision
Hank will talk about his new books, including Peace Beyond All Fear: A Tribute to John Denver’s Vision.

1:00 Wilson, Gary
Gary will talk about how to advertise and promote books, and give a list of websites and ideas.

2:00 Willson, Harry – author, of Duke City Tales and Vermin
Gatuskin, Zelda – author, The Time Dancer, Ancestral Notes, & Castle Lark
Harry Willson: Approaches to the Short Story. Harry will discuss and read from his two collections. DUKE CITY TALES takes a whimsical attitude; VERMIN is more cross; both volumes explore the ironies and idiosyncrasies of the human condition from a uniquely southwestern perspective.
Zelda Gatuskin: One Thing Leads to Another. Zelda will read from each book, explaining her progression from one to the other. THE TIME DANCER was a just-for-fun fantasy novel, but reclaiming Gatuskin as her pen name resulted in Zelda’s very serious inquiry into family history and the ANCESTRAL NOTES collection. CASTLE LARK combined her new interest in genealogy with her lifelong love of fantasy.

2:00 Aspectos Culturales and Georgia Roybal
Georgia will talk about new releases from Aspectos Culturales including 500 Years of Chicano History, Libritos, and Quien Soy.

2:00 Redsand, Anna - author , Viktor Frankl: A Life Worth Living
Anna will also read from her book, Viktor Frankl: A Life Worth Living." WHY ARE YOU HERE? EXPLORING THE MEANING OF YOUR LIFE. Viktor Frankl survived 4 concentration camps during the Holocaust, in part by living his belief that if we can find meaning in even the worst situation, it will help us to survive it and become stronger. Through storytelling, journaling and art/writing projects young people, parents, and teachers will have the opportunity to explore life purpose, personal values and beliefs, and ways of overcoming obstacles through finding meaning.

3:00 Steinsiek, Sabra – author, Red Velvet Shoes: Contemporary Haiku and Anne’s Song
Sabra will present an interactive workshop on writing Haiku poetry.

3:00 Tarbescu, Edith – author, Annushka’s Voyage
Edith Tarbescu, author of four children's books, will speak about her
book "Annushka's Voyage," about two young girls who journey from Russia to Ellis Island around 1910. She will show enlarged photographs of people traveling in steerage, as well as enlarged photographs of the Lower East Side, in New York, same period. She is also the author of "The Crow" a non-fiction book about the Crow Nation, of Montana. She will speak about researching her book as well as color photographs she took at the Crow Fair in Montana. In addition, she will show rawhide as well as tanned hide and speak about the culture of the Crow Nation.

3:00 Vadurro, Bernadette – author, America’s Conscience
If you think you’re too busy to be politically active, think again. Not only can you change the destructive course our nation is on, you must. America’s Conscience, was written to stir yours into action. If you are like most Americans you’re probably thinking, if I didn’t have to spend so much time raising the kids, working long, stressful weeks, and meeting a million other obligations, maybe I’d have time to be politically active. In the face of the war still raging in Iraq, a growing energy crisis, and a depressing list of social and economic problems, Bernadette will talk about how you can become better politically informed and involved to make a difference this election year. Bernadette Vadurro is the author of America’s Conscience: Facing Threats to Democracy the Middle Class and Our World. She is an award winning businessperson, a professional speaker and a passionate community leader; she was recently named one of the top 10 Latina Entrepreneurs in the United States. She lives in Santa Fe.
