Create Compelling Characters and Dynamic Dialog

Margaret Coel's latest mystery

Who are those people in your head? And what are they saying? Author Margaret Coel will help you get to know the characters in your imagination and transport them into your story. You will learn how to give characters distinct personalities, viewpoints, and motivations that will make them come alive on the page. Coel will show how dialog is a crucial devise to transform characters into multi-dimensional people--and keep the story moving. Using non-intimidating, hands-on practice, she will help students learn to write dialog that feels like conversation and develop techniques that allow characters to act, react, suffer, change, prevail and, finally, live on in the minds of the reader.
The New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Wind River mystery series, Margaret Coel sets her stories among the Arapahos on Wyoming's Wind River Reservation. Her novels have won many awards and been on numerous bestseller lists including the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. Among her honors are five Colorado Book Awards and the Rocky Award for Best Mystery Novel set in the American West, presented at the Left Coast Crime Conference.

As Requested: Manuscript Reviews

Editor Judith Van Gieson
Author. publisher and editor Judith Van Gieson has agreed to help aspiring authors refine their first chapters and improve their synopses. Judith will read a synopsis and up to 25 pages of the first chapter of the manuscripts and meet with writers privately during the conference to discuss their work, focusing on strenghts and on areas that could use some improvement. The offer is open to writers of both fiction and non-fiction and includes a written critique, a half-hour private session with Judith and a two-hour class on writing first chapters. Critques are available at a discount to those who register for at least one day of the conference.

June 1 Deadline for $10,000 Hillerman Prize
The Tony Hillerman Prize for best first mystery, created and co-sponsored by WORDHARVESTand St. Martin's Press, honors the memory of New Mexico author Tony Hillerman. The contest is open to previously unpublished book length manuscript (no less than 220 typewritten pages or approximately 60,000 words). The story must be set in the Southwestern United States and the author must be unpublished in the mystery genre. (Most self-published novels are allowed.) Entries must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2010. The complete guidelines and entry form are here. Good luck!

Successful Writing Tip:

Author Tony Hillerman often quipped that writer's block "was spelled L-A-Z-Y."
However, if a novel he had in the works stalled, he would drive out to the landscape where the story took place, usually the Navajo reservation. This emersion in the scene, and time away from the computer, usually reinvigorated his writing process. Try it yourself.

We'll be in touch with announcements about the conference and hope to have our next newsletter to you in mid-May. If something interesting has happened in your writing life, please send us your news with NEWS in the subject line. Photos are welcome, too. We'll try to include your news in our next issue or on our blog. Until then, happy writing!

Sincerely,

Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg

Carolyn Howard Johnson and Her Poems

Celebration Series of Poems iPad Bound

Technology is ever changing. It’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest news, gadgets, and trends, especially when it comes to e-books and reading habits.

Yet the least likely of tech-geeks, authors Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Magdalena Ball, are always keen and to meet their readers’ needs, and when Smashwords.com announced its new deal with Apple to produce formats suitable for the iPad and Apple’s new iBookstore, the authors immediately agreed, and jumped into action, pulling together the appropriate formatting for all of their celebration series books and putting them forward for conversion.

The celebration series has been designed specifically to replace the trite, cliché sentiments of greeting cards, at prices that are little more than the cost of a high end card. Many of the books are beautifully illustrated with paintings or photographs, with poetry designed along themes that focus on mothers (She Wore Emerald Then, www.budurlcom/MotherChapbook for the paperback and http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/8846 for the e-book versions ), fathers and other men (Imagining the Future , www.budurl.com/Imagining for the paperback and http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/11189 for the e-book versions), and love (Cherished Pulse, www.budurl.com/CherishedPulse for the paperback and http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/8086 for the e-book versions).

More books are in the works, including a Christmas chapbook. Hard copies of all the books are available at Amazon as giftable, low-priced paperbacks, or you can pick them up in whatever format suits, including the iPad, Kindle, Epub (Stanza reader), .pdf, LTF (for Sony reader), and more at Smashwords.com, http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/maggieball. Note: As this date Smashwords doesn’t accept coauthor listings. That these formats are evolving is evident!

So, though two authors are involved, this page lists only Ball who set the page up.

As far as Howard-Johnson and Ball are concerned, whatever format suits their reader suits them. It’s all good.

Magdalena Ball runs the highly respected compulsivereader.com review site. She is the author of the poetry book Repulsion Thrust, which was published in December 2009 to unanimous 5-star reviews. Her novel Sleep Before Evening, published in 2007, was a Next Generation Indie Book Awards finalist.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson's poetry appears frequently in review journals. She is listed in Poets & Writers and her chapbook of poetry, Tracings (www.budurl.com/CarolynsTracings ), was given the Award of Excellence by the Military Writers Society of America. She is also an award-winning novelist and short story writer and instructor for UCLA Extension Writers' Program.

For more information on any of the chapbooks in this poetry series, contact either of the authors or visit media rooms at www.howtodoitfrugally.com or www.magdalenaball.com .

Gardens of Santa Fe

Dear friends,
Over the last few months, Don and I have been doing benefit book signings in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico for Tony Hillerman’s Landscape ---with a few more events on the horizon. We haven’t been home much.
When we looked out over the driveway yesterday there, where a pile of snow sat last week, I noticed two beautiful white crocuses, each about an inch tall, enjoying the April sun. We’ve still got mounds of snow under the piñon trees but spring, and juniper pollen, are in the air. In keeping with the spirit of the season, Don and I are delighted to announce the release of our newest book, Gardens of Santa Fe, pub date, April 1st.
Please join us for our book launch at Garcia Street Books this Saturday (April 3) at 2 p.m. The address is 376 Garcia Street, Santa Fe. (505-986-0151) Owners Edward and Eva Bornis have generously agreed to donate part of the proceeds to the Hillerman-McGarrity Scholarship at the University of New Mexico’s Creative Writing Department.
And, as of now at least, there’s no snow in the forecast for Saturday!

Here are some other signing dates for the Garden book:
April 9, 6:30 p.m. Talk and slide show of photos and “outtakes” from Gardens of Santa Fe, Page One bookstore, 11200 Montgomery Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, NM 505-299-6766.
April 10, 4 p.m. Talk and book signing hosted by Santa Fe Botanical Garden at a garden featured in the book. Open to all by reservation, 505-471-9103 or info@santafebotanicalgarden.org for time and directions.
April 11, 5:30 p.m. Talk and slide show of photos and “outtakes” from Gardens of Santa Fe $5 admission benefits the Santa Fe Garden Club. Museum of Indian Art and Culture auditorium, Museum Hill, Santa Fe. 505-438-7300 for information and reservations.
April 24, 3 p.m. Talk and slide show of photos and “outtakes” from Gardens of Santa Fe at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque, N.M. 505- 344-8139
On April 27, we are at the International Reading Conference in Chicago giving a talk and showing slides of the Tony Hillerman Landscape book.
Hope to see you soon,
Anne and Don

Vote and Help LPD Prwss Get a Grant

One Nation One Year Vote & Help Us Win A Grant from Pepsi

Pepsi Refresh
Help! We don’t ask often but we need your help now and it won’t cost you any money and a minute of your time in April.
We have applied to Pepsi Refresh (www.refresheverything.com/) for a grant of $5,000 for the One Nation One Year Project. It is a coffee table book that is funded and printing as we speak and an exhibit at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque in June. The $5,000 would fund mounting, signage, and if any money is left some advertising. One Nation One Year is the photographic essay of the Navajo Nation and Albuquerque The Magazine photographer – Don James, who is Navajo, was embedded in the Navajo Nation and took thousands of photos. He had special access and the photos are great!
But Pepsi only gives money to the top internet vote getters for April. We think we can do it. We want you and everyone in your email list to vote on One Nation One Year for the entire month of April. It takes one minute to log on and then everyday it will take seconds to vote.
Unfortunately, I will remind you once in a while in April but that won’t be so bad. Also people involved with an organization might want to check out the process and do it themselves. We will reciprocate!
Go to Pepsi Refresh (www.refresheverything.com/), log in, then go to Arts/Culture for $5,000. Look for ONE NATION ONE YEAR: A NAVAJO PHOTOGRAPHER ON THE NAVAJO NATION. If you have any questions we are happy to answer. Put a note on your computer NOW to vote every day during April for One Nation! Please pass this message along to everyone on your email address book.
Thanks! Barbe Awalt, Paul Rhetts, Larryl Lynch of Albuquerque The Magazine, and Don James the photographer – we can’t do this without you! This is no April Fool joke!
