Dear Sharing with Writers Subscribers:
This is your AllTips edition. And I am cranky this morning. That’s not the
best way to start your semi annual edition of Sharing with Writers
newsletter, I know. But it comes with a very important tip so you or your
publisher or your press won’t rile up the editors/reviewers/authors/ you
send your books to.
I am reprinting the note I just fired off to a press. You’ll see what I
mean:
Dear Publisher:
I received a copy of a book XX yesterday. Lovely cover. Good title. But no
note, no review copy label. No business card. No cover letter. Nothing.
What to do with it? Endorsement? Review? A mention in my newsletter (is
the author a subscriber)? There wasn’t even an e - mail or Web site
address for the author. That means I have to research my mail before I
begin to schedule my week’s work.
Sorry to be grumpy, but this is one of the reasons that reviewers get a
bad name and why authors get called “snooty” because we don’t answer our
mail. We (authors, editors, freelance writers) often wear many hats - -
and we also have very short memories!
I'm only mentioning this so that you might fix your system. Perhaps you
could include a little postcard in your mailings? It could include author
contact information and/or mentions the purpose for which it is being
sent. Some publishers/presses put a label on the inside cover. I'm fine
with that but some, like Midwest Review, ask that you not "deface" their
copies in any way. There is no one "right way" but there is a wrong way.
And that's to leave your contact without essential information.

I might mention that I often get beautiful post cards for new releases and
they don’t include an e - mail address. I can’t help if these authors
prefer ticking editors off or wasting their own money. And readers? Mmmm.
Don’t they deserve to contact you with fan mail or questions? MUST you
force them to go to your Web site to contact you? I know that there are
authors on the Web who actually advise that authors send people to their
Web site's home page and hope that that person will spend a looooong time
nosing around. This may be one of stupidest pieces of advice for authors
being circulated. Your job as your own publicist (even if you have hired
one) is to make things as easy as possible on your readers, editors,
agents and others. Give them what they need to work quickly. They will be
indebted. If you don't, they may drop you . . . or at least not ask come
back for more mistreatment.
I realize that, as authors, we often don’t have control over what our
publisher or the press that may send out our copies, so that leads me to
another tip:
I remember agent Michael Larsen mentioning this at one of the first writer
’s conferences I attended. He said, "Follow up!" If, a couple of days
after I received something in the mail I didn’t know what to do with, it
would be a help if the author asked if I got the review copy (or whatever
it was!), not a hindrance.
We authors are in business, after all. And good business communication is
essential for good business! We hear all the time that agents and
publishers and editors don’t like to be hounded. Well, no. They don’t. But
they do like to be helped.
By the way, I didn't mention plain old manners in the letter I sent. (I
guess I wasn't in such a bad mood after all!) I mean, what would it have
hurt to include a thank you? But you all know I am a mother who insisted
my kids write their thank yous and, that I nagged my readers to send their
thank yous inThe Frugal Book Promoter

You also see a regular thank you column in this newsletter. It’s about
thank yous, but it’s also about resources for my readers. I always try to
include a link or information in those thank yous that will give authors
access to another place to promote. So what can you do with a
mother/editor/author/freelancer like that? Smile and take her advice?

I'm back from three days of writers' panels in Chicago, Programs. Each
year, Association of Writers and Writing (AWP) (holds a conference at a
different city in the country. Last year was in New York City where John
Irving was the keynote speaker. This year was in Chicago with graphic
novelist Art Spiegelman as the keynote speaker. (You can learn more about
the Conference and AWP itself by going to

One thing I was reminded of at a panel on promotion was "In your media
release headline, don't use your name or your book's title. If people
don't know you, it's not going to grab. It's probably something you've
said often, but it's easy to forget, especially after my first press
release on my book simply announced my name and book's title and the
publication date.
Thus, I went back to PR Web and wrote a new release with the headline,
Kidneys Fail and Moon Brightens for Rising Writer in March. You can see

Perhaps the second time is the charm.

Fred's Used Websites is about to embark upon the next step of our entrepreneurial venture with hopes of increasing our clientèle with higher visibility.
After a ton of hard work building infrastructure and perfecting our offerings, we have decided to join the Loveland Chamber of Commerce.
This big event takes place Thursday, March 12 at 4:30 pm at the Chamber, 5400 Stone Creek Circle in Loveland.
Festivities will include a Ribbon Cutting ceremony and refreshments. Attendees will receive a special value coupon for six months free web hosting with us.
We'd love to have you come join the celebration and watch Fred wield giant-sized scissors!
You authors (or anybody else) who may need or want a new web site, here's an opportunity.
For those who don't know exactly all of what we do, here's a brief overview:

Each website features a built-in uniquely simple yet powerful editor that requires no special software or knowledge of HTML. Website clients have complete autonomy to add/delete pages, and edit text or photos at will. For the more creative, jazzy fonts and drop caps are available via a server-generated enhanced text capability. It is possible to create special insets to make important information stand out. Every site uses Google Analytics to track website traffic, which provides valuable marketing information about how visitors find the site, which pages they visit, and if those visits translate to sales.

BOOK FIESTA IN SANTA FE — NO COST TO PARTICIPATE!!!
The New Mexico Book Co-op and Clear Light Publishers in Santa Fe are banding together to organize two special book selling opportunities in Santa Fe.
Clear Light Publishers has graciously offered to host two events in Santa Fe at their new Clear Light Book Gallery on West San Mateo for the Book Awards Winners & Finalists and a book Fiesta for everyone. Please read rules carefully; space is limited so act fast. Clear Light Book Gallery is located at 851 West San Mateo (next to Open Hands). They have 3,000 square feet of display space available for us.
JANUARY 31, 2009 -- Winners & Finalists Book Fiesta
On January 31, 2009, there will be an event for Winners & Finalists in the 2008 Book Awards.
FEBRUARY 21, 2009 — Book Fiesta for Everyone
On February 21, 2009, they will have a Book Fiesta for anyone.
FREE, but you must help in promotion. There will be no cost to participate in either event. If you wish to participate you must send the email addresses of at least 25 of your potential customers (who might come to the events) in the Santa Fe area (40 email addresses if you want to participate in both events) and send these addresses to info@nmbookcoop.com. The New Mexico Book Co-op will handle the publicity for the events and will send out email announcements to people to encourage people to attend.
The events will be 10am-4pm and you are asked to be there by 9:30am to set up. No tear-down is allowed before 4pm. Each participant will have 1/2 of a table (two people to a table); if you have more than 10 titles, arrangements can be made for a larger space. A participant may bring other books as well Participation will be on a first-come basis, until space is gone. Tables will be provided for both events. You don’t have to bring tables. Participants get 75% of all book sales; 25% will go to Clear Light for handling all sales. Clear Light will handle the cash register and credit card processing. Checks for sales will be sent out a week after the event. Books must be marked with price (we highly advise removable labels that are available at stores like Staples and Office Max).
ANOTHER BOOK DISPLAY OPPORTUNITY

Due to the sudden closing of Hometown the end of October we have moved our holiday party to Lin’s. Yes, it is a Chinese buffet but there are many American dishes as well and it may be the largest buffet in Albuquerque. When you pay tell them that you are in the private party! Lunch is $9.48 (includes tax and drink; please add about $1.50 for a tip!!!!). No speaker -- just a good time! You must RSVP (344-9382) that you are coming so we get the right size room!

You've written the initial draft(s) of your short story. Now what? Bring your work to this class and hone your storytelling skills further through the process of honest and positive peer review. The first class will focus on constructive critiquing techniques. We will then critique one another's stories, and time will be available to discuss any topics of interest to the class. Requirement: Participants must have at least one short story (5,000 words or less) completed and ready to turn in by the first session Lead by David J. Corwell (his short fiction has appeared in Dead in Th13teen Flashes and Cloaked in Shadow: Dark Tales of Elves. His writing has won seven national writing awards, including a SouthWest Writers (SWW) Storyteller Award. He received his M.A. in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. David is a member of the New Mexico Book Coop and SWW, as well as a graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop and the Borderlands Press Writer's Boot Camp.). As we prepare for our summer writing workshops, we wanted to share some good news.
One of our presenters, Sandi Ault, received a huge honor for her book Wild Indigo
Craig Johnson, who will join us in November for the Hillerman Mystery Conference, earned a cover story in Publishers Weekly and a starred review.
Also, July 1 is the deadline to submit a manuscript for the $10,0000 Hillerman Prize for first mystery. Please share this information with your writer friends.

Sandi Ault's Wild Indigo received the Mystery Writers of America's Mary Higgins Clark Award, a special Edgar. This award sponsored by publisher Simon & Schuster is given to the book most closely written in the Mary Higgins Clark tradition. Wild Indigo received critical acclaim from media, other authors (including Tony Hillerman and C.J. Box) and fans. The novel appeared on nine bestseller lists and sold out of its first printing in less than seven days.
Sandi will teach Make it a Grand First Grand: The First 1,000 Words on Aug. 9 and will offer a pre-conference workshop on editing November 5 at the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference. Other summer workshops include screenplays, travel writing, writing for kids, and research-based prose with award-winning author Sharman Apt Russell.
