Wordharvest Writer Workshops

WORDHARVEST

Writers Workshops

304 Calle Oso Santa Fe, NM 87501

505-471-1565 wordharvest@wordharvest.com www.wordharvest.com

Summer writing workshops feature travel, children’s books, screenplays and more

Santa Fe – Wordharvest WORDHARVEST will offer five writing workshops this summer, including a day with award-winning nature writer Sharman Apt Russell. Russell’s newest book is Standing in the Light: My Life as a Pantheist (Basic Books). Well-known for the ability to transform her meticulous research into lyric prose, Russell will talk about the joys and challenges of research for non-fiction, fiction and poetry.

The summer series, July 12- Aug. 9, also features best-selling mystery author Sandi Ault, screenwriter Rich Reichman, children’s author extraordinaire Shirley Raye Redmond and travel writer-photographer Ellen Barone.

Here’s the schedule:

July 12, Turn Your Adventures Into Travel Writing, Ellen Barone
July 19, Break Into Print Now with Children's Books, Shirley Raye Redmond
July 26, The Fearless Heart: Research-based Prose, Sharman Russell,
August 2 Screenwriting, Rick Reichman
August 9 Make it a Grand First Grand: The First 1,000 Words, Sandi Ault
All workshops are held in Santa Fe at a writer's home near the Plaza from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m . The fee for each workshop, $140 plus tax, includes a tasty lunch, snacks and handouts. Registration is available on line or by phone. For information: (505) 471-1565 www.wordhavest.com

A decade ago, with no qualifications other than a traveler’s eye and a knack for telling a tale, Ellen Barone followed her heart to become a travel writer. She’s written about crossing the Sahara on camel for The Oregonian; fine dining in Marrakech for Australian Gourmet Traveler; expedition cruising in Nicaragua for Cruise Traveler; Hidden New Mexico for Texas Monthly; and more. Her photographs have appeared in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Condé Nast Traveler, Islands, The Los Angeles Times Sunday Travel Section, Spa, and a wide variety of regional, national and international publications. In her workshop Barone will help students learn to track their journey through notes, journals and photographs; capture a trip in a way that will intrigue readers and editors in print and online; write attention-grabbing query letters and story pitches; and blog professionally.

Shirley Raye Redmond's "Break Into Print Now with Children's Books" covers both writing and marketing books. In addition to writing exercises, attendees will learn key lessons in plotting children's fiction and trade secrets to catch the eye of a New York editor. Redmond is the award-winning author of 13 children's books including “Lewis and Clark: A Prairie Dog for the President” (Random House) which has sold
more than 155,000 copies and was a Children's Book of the Month Club main
selection. Pigeon Hero! Patriots in Petticoats (Random House) was named one of the
best children's books of 2005.

Rick Reichman graduated with an MFA in Writing (emphasis on film and television writing) from the University of Southern California. He has optioned two scripts and has had several documentaries and training scripts produced. His first book Formatting Your Screenplay has sold over 13,000 copies, and his new book 20 Things You Must Know To Write A Great Screenplay will be published this year. His students have sold scripts to Fox, Warner Brothers, HBO, Showtime, PBS, TNN and all the major networks.

Crucial beginnings are the focus of novelist Sandi Ault’s workshop. Ault will help students learn to launch a piece of writing to provide a foundation, lure the reader, establish the premise, and often sell the work. The workshop will include goals for the first 100 words, vital elements of the opening scene in both fiction and non-fiction; dynamics of second scenes and the minimum requirements for the first 1000 words of a fiction or non-fiction book. Ault says hands-on writing, handouts, memory tools and small group exercises will add to the fun. She is the author of Berkley Prime Crime's WILD Mystery Series featuring BLM Resource Protection Agent Jamaica Wild and her wolf Mountain. The first of Ault’s series, Wild Indigo, was nominated for the prestigious Mary Higgins Clark Award.

SPACE GOING VERY FAST FOR THE NEW MEXICO BOOK CATALOG
SHOW YOUR BOOKS TO EVERY BOOKSTORE AND LIBRARY IN NM
Here is an opportunity for you to get your book in front of every bookstore and library in New Mexico — about 2,000 locations in an economical way, but there are only a few spaces left. The response has been so strong there are only 6 pages left! If you mailed a flier to every one of these stores and libraries it would cost you over $800. But the New Mexico Book Co-op has organized a special project to get your book in front of all these potential buyers for just $180.Many of you said you wanted to have a catalog of local books that could go to bookstores and libraries in the state. The New Mexico Book Co-op listened. Now is a chance for fast acting publishers and authors to make a catalog and have it mailed out. For $180 you get your book included in a catalog of New Mexico books designed to catch the interest of book buyers — this fee includes the cost to design, print, and mail the catalog to all bookstores and libraries in the state. Plus, we will send you 100 copies of the catalog that you can use. If you want more information on this project go to http://nmbookcoop.com/page18/page92/files/NMBC%20Catalog%20flier.pdf
