Christmas in July: Prepare Memorable Greetings Now
Little Known Poetry History: Chapbooks, a tradition in the poetry world since Elizabethan times, are named after the itinerant chapmen who travelled from village to village selling their goods.

Award-winning poets Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Magdalena Ball figure nothing is more meaningful at any holiday than a poem—a real poem, not sing-songy impersonal verse from the shelves of card shops. They also noticed that many people order imprinted holiday greetings (very expensive ones!) in July. With that in mind they are offering a great Christmas- in- July incentive to those early birds who want to gift a chapbook Blooming Red: Christmas Poetry for the Rational to their most cherished friends. .

But how would poetry lovers, literature lovers and those who just like something different and beautiful to use as mini gifts or greetings know if this little booklet is for them?

These multi award-winning authors have arranged to get the e-book version for 50% off until August 6. That means your sample comes to you for a mere $1.98 using the special coupon code ZZ47S when you go to http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/45393

Then, when you fall in love with the exquisite poetry and the beautiful artwork by award-winning California watercolorist Vicki Thomas, you can order 25 full paperback booklets for only $3.00 each. This is a substantial discount from Amazon’s price of $6.95 each. They become your card and gift in one and orders of 12 or more come autographed by one of the poets. That’s got to be more personal than an imprint.

You just send your shipping address with your check or money order to:

Carolyn Howard-Johnson
PO Box 1101
LaCanada-Flintridge, CA 91012-1101

Include $6. Ship charges for the continental US and $12 worldwide, any quantity. Please order before August 15th.

Blooming Red includes Maggie’s science-inspired and Carolyn’s nostalgic poetry. It also includes some humorous poems for fair measure.

Magdalena Ball runs the highly respected CompulsiveReader.com review site. She is the author of the poetry book Repulsion Thrust, which was published to unanimous 5-star reviews. Fun Things from Anne Hillerman of the Write On Four Corners family

Happy summer, everyone! Hope your writing is going well. We are pleased that Tania Casselle, a 2011 faculty member, has agreed to share a writing tip in this issue. Tania and her novelist husband Sean Murphy will be offering manuscript critiques this year in conjunction with the Hillerman Conference for those in the market for good advice on their writing. Also please remember our mystery short story contest deadline is August 15th.
Finally, send us your news for our next newsletter. We're happy to help fellow writers and our former students share their accomplishments.
Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg

Are you working on that short story?
The deadline for the Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story Contest is August 15. WORDHARVEST welcomes our new co-sponsor, New Mexico Magazine, which will publish the winning entry and give the writer $1,000. To qualify the story:
Must be 2,500 words or less
Must be set primarily in New Mexico
Must be a mystery
Must be postmarked no later than August 15, 2011
You'll find the entry form and complete rules here
New Mexico Magazine's new editor, Dave Herndon, has graciously agreed to join us at the Tony Hillerman Conference on a panel: Pitches, Synopses, and Queries to Seduce an Editor/Agent. Fellow panelists will include St. Martin's Press editor Peter Joseph, author Bill O'Hanlon, and literary and film agent Liz Trupin-Pulli. Don't miss it! Their talk will be Saturday, November 12. You'll find more information by clicking on the complete conference schedule.

Writing Tip: Look for the True Beginning of a Story
From Tania Casselle
"To find the true beginning of a story, read your work out loud. Notice the first place that you feel hooked in, the first place with vital energy. One of the most valuable things I learned as a magazine editor was that the REAL story often starts at the bottom of page one. That's where it 'drops' and gets juicy. The previous paragraphs could be cut, because they were just the writer warming up, flexing muscles to ease into the piece. Sometimes it's just a question of changing the order of the story's unfolding so you start at the strongest point possible. Often, the best place to start is in Media Res (in the middle of things) so the story kicks off with some immediate action or forward thrust, without any explanation of how we got here. (You can fill in back-story details later, once you've drawn your reader in.) Hemingway's Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is a classic example - you're dropped into a conflict between the characters, and only later find out what triggered it."
(Casselle has been a writer and editor for more than 20 years, contributing to magazines, newspapers and online media. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee for short fiction, and her stories have been selected for several anthologies including the forthcoming Online Writing: The Best of the First Ten Years (Snowvigate Press). She has received the Raymond Carver Short Story Award, the Virginia Woolf Asham Award, and numerous other awards. She's the author of Insiders' Guide to Albuquerque (Globe Pequot Press, 2010) She and Sean Murphy, winner of the Hemmingway Prize, will offer critiques as part of the Tony Hillerman Writer's Conference.)

Most travelers to China visit the eastern cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Wonderful destinations in themselves, they give a limited perspective on the country, as a traveler from China would get if they visited New York, Washington, and Miami, and thought they had seen America.

Husband and wife team, Stan Biderman (author), and Kathryn Minette (photographer), criss-crossed the country initially seeking artifacts and cultural mementos--visiting the Silk Road, Gobi Desert, and ancient market outposts of Dunhuang, Turpan, and Kashgar--what they experienced was marching troops in the western city of Urumqi, where only a few months before their visit 197 people were killed in clashes between the majority Han and the Uighur people of the Xinjiang Province. Then they traveled to Tibet to see the beauty of the Tibetan people striding with prayer wheels under the threatening watch of the Chinese army patrolling with machine guns. Their trip became so much more than they expected.

Stan and Kathryn also went to observe what the media is portraying as the next nation to test the U.S. as a superpower. Having visited Tiananmen Square, seen the Shanghai skyscrapers, and breathed acrid air throughout the country, they saw a rapidly growing land on the rise and flush with money, much of it derived from manufacturing goods much cheaper than western nations are able to produce them. What they did not see was innovation, and observed that in a country with no free speech there was no true innovation. They concluded that, like the Soviet Union before, China’s restrictions on its citizens was a metaphor for the ultimate restriction of the success of the country.
China will rise but its ceiling is limited, and as we have seen in the Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya nations which oppress their citizens, these countries ultimately pay a deadly price.
A slide show of Minette's photos will be presented at their book discussions and signings.

July New Mexico Book Co-op News
Calling All Children's Book Authors
Have you published a children's book? Would you be willing to read a portion of it live on the radio in Albuquerque? Kathy Barco is compiling a list of authors who would be interested in taking part in a Sunday afternoon radio show that happens almost every Sunday during the school year. If this appeals to you, please e-mail Kathy your contact information and she will pass it along to the show's coordinator.
NOTE: You won't be paid, but you will get to plug your book on the air. And think of the fun you'll have telling your friends to tune in! Contact Kathy Barco at barcok@newmexico.com if you are interested.
July Co-op Meeting
As you should know there are no meeting of the Book Co-op during the summer. So our next meeting will be on September 23 at our regular location (Golden Corral on the Westside). Our speaker will be Don Bullis, who is the NM Centennial Author. He will be talking about the program for NM Centennial, the Centennial authors, and his newest book projects.

Voices in Abiquiu
Linda Dunning has organized a special event for the authors/contributors to the NM Book Co-op's "Voices of New Mexico" book. On Saturday, July 16 at the Abiquiu Inn from 1-3pm, authors will be talking about their entries in the book and will be available for signings. Come and support our great local NM authors.
Literacy Day at the Main Albuquerque Library
This is an opportunity for all of us to sell books, support literacy, and support the Albuquerque Library. This has not be done on this scale before so we do not know what to expect but if it is to be successful YOU have to tell family and friends who can come to make an appearance and enjoy. It is an especially kid friendly event!
Thursday, September 8, 2011, 11am to 4pm
The book sale area on the bottom floor will feature publishers, authors, and books of all kinds for sale. This is a very large area across from the auditorium and the story pit where a lot of the activities are taking place. There are a limited number of tables available and it is first come. Because the fee is so inexpensive ($20@) an author/publisher may have more than one table so if a group of friends want tables together it would be a good idea to have one person get them. All sellers have to fill out the City form to sell books and that is why we can not have last minute sign ups. We will give your name to the Library to send you by email a form that you can send back to them. Don’t wait to do this because the tables may be gone at this price!
Facts for the sale: • There will be advertising. • Food/drink is only allowed in the book sale room – a good thing • You may not set up until 10am because the library doesn’t open until then. You can set up between 10-11am and be ready for customers at 11am. NO late set ups allowed. • You may sell other things at your table. • Big names are speaking at the Fair – we just can’t tell you about it yet but so far Joe Hayes, Anne Hillerman & Don Strel, Nasario Garcia, & Slim Randles have confirmed. • All participating authors/publishers must pay and reserve in advance so the City can send you a form to fill out making you legal. No last minute shows! • Parking is available – 2 hours FREE at structure across the street or meters. You have to feed the meters. You must get your parking structure ticket validated at the front desk. We will see if vendors can have something else too. • A cute coffee shop sells drinks, lunches on premise. You can bring food & drink. • Checks must accompany reservations and made out to Friends of the Albuquerque Library. They must be mailed to NM Mexico Book Co-op, 925 Salamanca NW, Los Ranchos, NM 87107. • Exhibitors MAY NOT LEAVE AND PACK UP EARLY!! This is rude and may eliminate you from further events. • Albuquerque Library reserves the right to find materials objectionable to families and return rental fee. • No refunds except if dictated from Albuquerque Library. • Please have with you a tax/business registration in case you are asked. Remember this is a City property and they can ask! The worst case scenario – you can be shut down and asked to leave – you must charge tax or have a sign saying tax is included in book prices. • Bags are good.

Local IQ Runs Rave Review
Local IQ Magazine ran a great review of THE WORLD COMES TO ALBUQUERQUE in the June 30 issue. Here is what they said:
"This is the big book that New Mexico ballooning fans have eagerly awaited. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and this official book recounts how it all happened in chapters like “Early Balloon Heritage,” “First Ladies of New Mexico Ballooning,” and “The Balloon Fiesta That Almost Wasn’t.” The photography, with shots from 37 excellent photographers, is spectacular and really captures the flavor of the sport in Albuquerque. There are no shots of balloons entangled in power lines or in flames, so this is obviously a coffee-table book and not an exposé. I loved the tale of Albuquerque’s first balloon launch on July 4, 1882, that attracted a crowd nearly the size of the entire city (population about 6,000). Since that time, people from 49 of the world’s 196 nations have ballooned in Albuquerque—a remarkable record in a noteworthy book that’s a “B+,” and would make a great Christmas gift for out-of-town friends."
Thanks for your support!!!!
Plus, they ran a nice notice of the upcoming book signing event at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque) on Saturday July 9 (3-4pm)
You'll notice we have some nice give-aways for all who attend and buy a copy! Hope to see you there!
