Writing Contest for New Mexico Writers

LAS CRUCES - An outstanding New Mexican writer will be honored for her work in non-fiction next spring when her book receives the prestigious Zia Award. Given each year by the New Mexico Press Women at their annual spring conference, women
writers living in the state are invited to submit their books for consideration for the award. The 2009 Zia Award will be given to the author of a non-fiction book published in 2006, 2007 or 2008. Some suggested non-fiction categories include general, essay, biography, autobiography, history, cookbook, humor, instructional, religious or inspirational, or photography. Each year the award rotates to one of three categories: non-fiction, fiction and children's literature. To accommodate this schedule, a book published in the last three years is eligible. Submissions can be made by the author or by someone else on behalf of the author, such as a publisher. Membership in the association is not required, but the writer must be a woman. Authors must also live in the state or have a strong connection to New Mexico; however the book can be published anywhere. A $10 submission fee is required and helps to defray the costs of the award. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 10, 2009. The 2008 Zia Award went to Anne Weaver for her children's book titled The Voyage of the Beetle. The 2010 Zia Award will be designated for fiction. The Zia Award was started by members in 1953 to honor an outstanding woman in New Mexico media. The New Mexico Press Women is the state chapter affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women and exists to provide professional development, networking and First Amendment right protection to professional journalists and communicators. For More information on the association please visit the website at: www.NewMexicoPressWomen.org.

Book entries are considered a donation to the organization and are not returned. The books will be part of the silent auction held at the annual spring awards banquet to raise scholarship funds. To submit a book entry to the Zia Award contest please send a cover letter containing contact information and a paragraph stating the author's connection to New Mexico, along with the book and a check for $10 payable to New Mexico Press Women to the following address postmarked by Jan. 10, 2009:

Rio Grande Books is pleased to announce the release of the second volume in the New Mexico: A Biographical Dictionary series. A multi-volume encyclopedia of the people of New Mexico—the 47th State in the Union, the book is a cross-section of people who have had an influence on life—and sometimes death—in the Land of Enchantment, from the time the first Europeans arrived around 1540 until 1980.

Volume I included over 600 entries and Volume II includes another 400 entries as well as a Historical Timeline of New Mexico’s history.

The series has received eight awards, including Finalist, 2008 New Mexico Book Awards, Winner, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Finalist-Historical Biography, 2007 National Best Books Award, Finalist-Reference, 2007 INDIE Excellence Book Awards, and Bronze Medalist-Reference Book, 2007 IPPY Book Awards.

AUTHOR INFO: Don Bullis is the author of five non-fiction books and two novels, including “The Old West Trivia Book” (1993), “New Mexico’s Finest: Peace Officers Killed in the Line of Duty, 1847-1999” (1999), “Bloodville” (2002) “99 New Mexicans …and a few other folks” (2005), and “Bull’s Eye” (2006) “New Mexico: A Biographical Dictionary 1540-1980, Volume I” has received seven (7) awards/honors, including Winner-New Mexico, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Winner-Nonfiction/Biography, 2007 New Mexico Press Women Awards, Finalist-Historical Biography, 2007 National Best Books Awards, Finalist-Reference, 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, Finalist-Reference, 2007 INDIE Excellence Book Awards, Bronze Medalist-Reference Book, 2007 IPPY Book Awards, and Notable Book, 2007 Southwest Books of the Year, Tucson-Pima Library System. Don Bullis is the Sheriff (president) of the Albuquerque Corral of Westerners International; member of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society of New Mexico; and a member of the Western History Association, Western Writers of America, the Albuquerque Historical Society, the Sandoval County Historical Society, the Corrales Historical Society, and the Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang. A graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, he lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

RAVE REVIEWS FOR THIS AWARD-WINNING SERIES:
“At last a dictionary I can read without being accused of spending time at a pursuit my wife finds laughable. I infrequently open a tattered Random House unbridged dictionary, flip through the pages, look up words strange to me and learn their definitions. Don Bullis has come to the rescue.” — Albuquerque Journal

“An entertaining book featuring a panoply of interesting people—some famous, some infamous, some obscure. But it is not just fun to read. It’s well researched. With sources, an extensive bibliography, and names indexed both alphabetically and grouped by exploits, the book is a useful reference tool that belongs on the shelves of southwestern writers, historians, genealogists, and anyone else who has an interest in the Land of Enchantment. — abqArts Magazine

“Bullis is well-known for his knowledge of New Mexico history. Indexed and annotated to serve as a research tool, this book is equally interesting to those interested in dipping into New Mexico’s unique history.” — POSH New Mexico Magazine

“For regional readers, this is a keeper.”— El Paso Times

BOOK DEALS WITH LIVING WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Jane Kriete Awalt, a resident of Oak Crest in Parkville, Maryland, is the author of a new book “The Stranger Comes At Sundown: Living & Dying With Parkinson’s Disease,” which was released in May. The book is a journal of Mrs. Awalt caring for her husband Bob, who died of Parkinson’s Disease in August, 2007. Bob Awalt was a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University (1943) and on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University from 1970 to 1990. The book is published by Rio Grande Books in Los Ranchos, New Mexico. The book is Awalt’s first. Awalt, a spry 83 years old, has already spoken to many care groups and support groups. She was also profiled in the Oak Crest resident newspaper “Village Voice.”

A personal journal of one family’s struggle with the progression of Parkinson’s disease — one can understand the medicine and the treatment for this devastating disease, but nothing prepares one for living & dying with Parkinson’s; this journal takes the reader by the hand as this disease takes control of one man’s life. More than 1,000,000 people in the United States are living, struggling, and dying with Parkinson’s Disease — 50,000 more are diagnosed in this country every year. Jane Awalt shares her personal journal of living and dying with her husband’s disease as a gift to others, helping us understand the stages and progression of this devasting illness. Bob’s story unfolds slowly like the disease, often taking startling turns and twists.

A must for caregivers and the families of Parkinson’s patients.

Proceeds from the book are being donated to

For most of the last two years of her husband’s fifteen-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Awalt kept a journal. As a primary caregiver, she brings the reader into her concerns: Will he wander away from the apartment during the night? Will he manage to reach the toilet or will she have another major cleanup chore? Will she be able to get him back into his bed when he falls out? Over and over, she gives thanks for the washer and dryer in the apartment. Over and over we hear about that Stranger who comes, frequently at sundown, to take over her husband’s personality, a Stranger who begins to act out violently. During the final three months, when she knows she can no longer continue to care for him herself, Awalt goes daily to spend hours with him at the Medical Center. This part of her journal kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. Written for other caregivers, Awalt makes her case clear for better communication between doctor and family members. She spells out flags to watch for in other Parkinson’s patients. One wonders what her husband’s last days would have been like without her presence in the Medical Center, in spite of the good care and extremely high costs of his treatment. Several unclear passages might have been reworked. Some of the repetitiveness could have been eased. But for all that, an insightful read. -- www.readingnewmexico.com

I highly recommend this book for anyone in any type of caregiver situation. I cried like baby after finishing The Stranger Comes At Sundown. Jane Awalt keeps a personal diary of the final few years of her husband’s life. Both are in their 80’s, yet their courage and attitude are amazing. Most of all, it is a legacy of care, love and support as this couple goes through the end of life together. For those dealing with a relative who has Parkinson’s disease this is a must read. It gave me a much better idea of what my parent’s both went through in my dad’s final years...and a hope that progress will be made in dealing with Parkinson’s. — Steve Stucker, KOB-TV (4) Albuquerque
