celebrate your freedom to read during banned books week!

DURANGO (September 25, 2007)-Banned Books Week - Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year. This year, it
will be celebrated from September 29th through October 6th. Observed since
1982, the annual event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE), the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Association of
College Stores. The Library of Congress Center for the Book endorses it.

Many bookstores and libraries across the nation, including Maria's Bookshop in Durango, join in the celebration with displays of books that have been
banned or threatened throughout history. These include works ranging from
the Bible to John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men."

Each year, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom receives hundreds of reports on books and other materials that were "challenged" (their removal from school or library shelves was requested).
The ALA estimates the number represents only about a quarter of the actual
challenges. "Most Challenged" titles include the popular "Harry Potter"
series of fantasy books for children by J.K. Rowling. The series drew
complaints from parents and others who believe the books promote witchcraft to children.

The challenges reported reflect a continuing concern with a wide variety of
themes. Other "Most Challenged" titles include "The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, for its use of language, particularly references to race; "It's Perfectly Normal," a sex education book by Robie Harris, for being too explicit, especially for children; and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, for the description of rape she suffered
as a child. For more information about this year's list of challenged
books, see http://www.abffe.org/bbw-booklist-detailed.htm.

In celebration of Banned Books Week 2007, Maria's Bookshop will be donating 10% from all gift card sales to the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) until supplies of the special "Freadom" gift cards run out.

Farmington Public Library, Farmington New Mexico Hosts Author

FARMINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY HOSTS RETURN OF STEPHEN ALLTEN BROWN

FARMINGTON, NEW MEXICO – The Farmington Public Library invites you to explore the wonder and mystery of Chaco Canyon with noted author Stephen Allten Brown. Mr. Brown will be at the Farmington Public Library on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 pm to discuss his book “The Shadows of Chaco Canyon." Mr. Brown was previously at the Farmington Public Library earlier this year. While he was here in February, Mr. Brown elaborated on the celestial events at Chaco Canyon, and how these elements play a significant role in his book. During this visit, he will further elaborate on the Great Houses, grand roadways, irrigation systems, and the solar and lunar markers at Chaco Canyon.

Stephen Allten Brown was born and raised in Albuquerque, graduated from the University of New Mexico, and is an avid outdoorsman. Keenly sensitive to the nuances of culture, he was captivated by the mysteriously spiritual ethos of Chaco Canyon upon his first visit in October, 2000. In his book “The Shadows of Chaco Canyon”, Mr. Brown has reanimated the miraculous world heritage site of Chaco Canyon with the addition of a fictional story that accompanies the real elements of Chaco Canyon.

Stephen Allten Brown’s perspective on the archeoastronomy of Chaco Canyon was an exciting and well received program at the library. Many Four Corners residents have requested another opportunity to hear his insights into how celestial events interact with the architecture of this local landmark. Mr. Brown will also be available for book signings after the discussion. “Chaco Canyon and its celestial features are a widely discussed topic here in the Four Corners,” stated Juris Odins, a Reference Librarian at the Farmington Public Library. “We felt this was a great opportunity to bring back Stephen Allten Brown so he could further discuss this amazing local attraction.”

For more information on the author talk and book signing with author Stephen Allten Brown, call the Farmington Public Library 599-1270 or log on to www.infoway.org.

Authors' Coalition Readies Third Semi-Annual All-Tips Issue

Glendale, CA—Pssst. Did you know?

That kind of approach has always caught our interest. We look for hot stuff on the stock market, best buys and, of course, better ways to do business. Now that authors find themselves in the positions of promoter and publisher as well as writer, they look for tips, too!

Tips, in fact, are the favorite feature of Authors' Coalition's newsletter, "Sharing with Writers." Founder of the organization, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, is editor of that letter and noticed that correspondence from readers was mostly about tips and more tips. Thus, the first-ever, all-new tips edition was born. After that, subscribers asked for more and the tips edition become a semi-annual event.

Authors' Coalition members are always encouraged to participate in the letter, to share with their fellows by sending articles and news. They came out in droves for this issue and the edition may need to become a two-part newsletter. Before September has waned, the third semi-annual edition will hit the email boxes of subscribers.

Authors' Coalition's site is under construction but interested authors may subscribe to the letter at http://authorscoaltionandredeneginepress.com) or do so by sending an e-mail with "subscribe" in the subject line to HoJoNews@aol.com.

The group also offers ad space, fee writing-related e-books, promotional ideas, a bookstore for to showcase their members' books, a blog focused on making humdrum booth at a book fair into a rousing success by using value-added promotions, (http://AuthorsCoalition.blogspot.com ), and more.

Directors of the group are published authors Pat McGrath Avery and Joyce Faulkner.

Howard-Johnson, the editor of "Sharing with Writers," is the author of USA Book News' Best Professional Book and Irwin Award winnner, The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't. Margaret Coel and The Girl with Braided Hair

A Journey to the Top

The trials and tribulations of Native Americans journey into today's society

Who: Margaret Coel
When: September 26th, from 7:00 - Noon Eastern

After enduring horrific conditions and laborious journeys, 21st Century Native Americans continue to become impoverished and are now forced to cope with the suffering of the previously afflicted generations. How can these tribes sustain living their own rich culture amongst today's high speed, high fashion, celebrity driven society with corrupt politicians, and steamy scandals?

New York Times Best-selling author Margaret Coel's latest novel, The Girl with Braided Hair, deals with the frauds against the Native Americans. Margaret weaves a parallel of the events of the heated summer of 1973, when activities of the American Indian Movement (AIM) were raging. She strives to showcase and prove that Native Americans are as normal and educated as your best friend. They are noble and flawed, brave and cowardly, funny and sad, good and not-so-good. They are people with a unique, wonderfully rich and ancient culture that can truly benefit all of us.

Margaret sheds light on the following:
§ How the rights of American Indians still get violated.
§ A historical context for the struggling plight of Native Americans.
§ How a tight-knit community can turn on its own and how such ostracizing can have deadly results or long-lasting repercussions.

§ How one approaches the solving of a cold case murder of nearly 35 years, with an unknown victim, no apparent motive, and no witnesses.

§ Why tales of the West still capture our curiosity.

About Margaret Coel: Margaret is the best-selling author of a Western novel series that centers on the Arapaho American Indians. The Girl with Braided Hair is her 13th in the Wind River series. She is a four-time winner of the Colorado Book Award, and is also the winner of the Willa (Cather) Award for Best Novel of the West.

Hampton Sides to Sigh Books in Durango, Colorado at Maria's Book Shop

DURANGO (August 22, 2007)-Maria's Bookshop at 960 Main Avenue in Durango will host a celebration of the paperback release of Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American with award-winning author Hampton Sides on Wednesday, October 10th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Sides will read from and sign his book, which was selected as the best regional nonfiction title of 2006 by the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association (www.mountainsplains.com ).

In the fall of 1846 the venerable Navajo warrior Narbona, greatest of his people's chieftains, looked down upon the small town of Santa Fe, the stronghold of the Mexican settlers he had been fighting his whole long life.
He had come to see if the rumors were true-if an army of blue-suited soldiers had swept in from the East and utterly defeated his ancestral enemies. As Narbona gazed down on the battlements and cannons of a mighty fort the invaders had built, he realized his foes had been vanquished-but what did the arrival of these "New Men" portend for the Navajo?

Narbona could not have known that "The Army of the West," in the midst of the longest march in American military history, was merely the vanguard of an inexorable tide fueled by a self-righteous ideology now known as "Manifest Destiny." For twenty years the Navajo, elusive lords of a huge swath of mountainous desert and pasturelands, would ferociously resist the flood of soldiers and settlers who wished to change their ancient way of life or destroy them.

Hampton Sides's extraordinary book brings the history of the American conquest of the West to ringing life. It is a tale with many heroes and villains, but as is found in the best history, the same person might be both. At the center of it all stands the remarkable figure of Kit Carson-the legendary trapper, scout, and soldier who embodies all the contradictions and ambiguities of the American experience in the West. Brave and clever, beloved by his contemporaries, Carson was an illiterate mountain man who twice married Indian women and understood and respected the tribes better than any other American alive. Yet he was also a cold-blooded killer who willingly followed orders tantamount to massacre. Carson's almost unimaginable exploits made him a household name when they were written up in pulp novels known as "blood-and-thunders," but now that name is a bitter curse for contemporary Navajo, who cannot forget his role in the travails of their ancestors.

Praise for Blood and Thunder

"Kit Carson's role in the conquest of the Navajo during and after the Civil War remains one of the most dramatic and significant episodes in the history of the American West. Hampton Sides portrays Carson in the larger context of the conquest of the entire West, including his frequent and often lethal encounters with hostile Native Americans. Unusually, Sides gives full voice to Indian leaders themselves about their trials and tribulations in their dealings with the whites. Here is a national hero on the level of Daniel Boone, presented with all of his flaws and virtues, in the context of American people's belief that it was their Manifest Destiny to occupy the entire West."
-Howard Lamar, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History, Yale University and editor of The New Encyclopedia of the American West

"The story of the American West has seldom been told with such intimacy and immediacy. Legendary figures like Kit Carson leap to life and history moves at a pulse-pounding pace-sweeping the reader along with it. Hampton Sides is a terrific storyteller."
-Candice Millard, author of The River of Doubt

"Hampton Sides doesn't just write a book, he transports the reader to another time and place. With his keen sense of drama and his crackling writing style, this master storyteller has bequeathed us a majestic history of the Old West."
-James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers and Flyboys

"Blood and Thunder is a big-hearted book whose subject is as expansive as they come. Hampton Sides tackles it with naked pleasure and narrative
cunning: In his telling, the vast saga of America's westward push has a logical center. The dusty town of Santa Fe becomes the nexus around which swirl the fortunes and strategies of a mixed set of serious overachievers, from Kit Carson, the original mountain man, to James K. Polk, the enigmatic president whose achievements, in the dreaded name of Manifest Destiny, were almost biblical in scope. Sides is alive to the exuberance and alert to the tragedy of the taking of the West."
-Russell Shorto, author of Island at the Center of the World

"For a huge percentage of us immigrant Americans (those whose ancestors arrived after 1492), Hampton Sides fills a gaping hole in our knowledge of American history-a vivid account of how 'The New Men' swept away the thriving civilizations of the Native Americans in their conquest of the West."
-Tony Hillerman
