Jews from poet Joey Foo

A Lily Lilies is the product of an 8-year collaboration between poet Josey Foo and Leah Stein, and is a cross-genre book of poetry, photography, and notes for choreography. It maps space through language, language through movement, and both space and movement through pictures in sections that move from immense spaces of the American Southwest to a dance stage in Philadelphia to the space of the self.

"A swallow swallows, a lily lilies . . . living beings, in a manner, keep living"

Mapping across space/time, cultures and sensibilities A Lily Lilies expresses the interweaving of the poetry of dance and the dance of poetry. Beautiful work!—Pauline Oliveros
What Josey Foo and Leah Stein have created here is a dramaturg's delight — poetry and movement on the page, with hints for the stage, and sound poems that may live only in the reader's mind. Foo's poems and Stein's responses become layered experiences in the synergy between the two artists. In their introduction they state that "Words and music contain pace and rhythm for movement in both illusionary and physical space." Let us now witness the grace of poetic imagery and the elegance of dance in words. Poetic images and stage images and stage directions and more morph and mingle into a sweet work of art.—Martha Wade Steketee

Free presentation on real-life spy stories

A Spy's Guide to Santa Fe, a free evening presentation about espionage, will open the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference on Nov. 10. Created by Edward Held (author of A Spy's Guide to Santa Fe and Albuquerque), the program will reveal some of the locations used by KGB operatives to meet with informers and gather information on atomic secrets. The KGB's single greatest intelligence and counterintelligence coups, and the planning of the organization's most infamous assassination, all took place within one mile of Saint Francis Cathedral in historic Santa Fe.

A retired CIA agent, Held served as Chief
of Counterintelligence at Sandia National Laboratories and is now Director of Intelligence and Counterintelligence at the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.

KSFR radio podcast

Catch the podcast of the delightful radio interview with conference presenters Douglas Preston and Hampton Sides, and organizer Anne Hillerman, from Tuesday, September 13th Santa Fe Radio Café with Mary-Charlotte Domandi on KSFR 101.1FM via Santa Fe Public Radio.

News from students and faculty
Hampton Sides, a presenter at the 2011 Tony Hillerman Writers Conference, got a mention in an op-ed piece in the Denver Post. The article concerned the potential closing of Colorado's historic Fort Lyon. Legendary mountain man Kit Carson died at the home of the post's doctor. The article notes that in Blood and Thunder, Hampton Sides' account of America's westward expansion, which uses Carson's life as its driving wheel, Fort Lyon is described as "a dreary place." Click here to read more about the historic fort.

Jo-Ann Mapson, a presenter at this year's conference, Wordharvest's Judith Van Gieson, and Anne Hillerman are among the 75 New Mexico women authors invited to participate in the Fourth Annual New Mexico Women Authors' Book Festival. Presented by the Museum of New Mexico at the New Mexico History Museum, the festival runs Sept. 30-Oct. 9. For a complete list of faculty and events, all free, click here.

Congratulations to past faculty member Cindy Bellinger on the release of her newest book, Into the Heat. And to conference student Joan K. Maze on a new paperback. Joan writes: "My book, Murder By Mistake, is now available in paperback on Amazon. To see this, type in Murder By Mistake or J. K. Maze and scroll down (far down) until you get to the paperback version. This is the Mollie Fenwick Mystery Series."

On Sunday, October 16th, from 2-4 p.m., New Mexico author and long-time Conference attendee and volunteer Rob Kresge will conduct a workshop for aspiring mystery writers at the Taylor Ranch Library, 5000 Bogart St., NW, in Albuquerque. Rob will offer handouts and advice on the query process, seeking agents and publishers, classic mysteries and helpful books on writing. Rob is the author of the Warbonnet mystery series, of which the first, Murder for Greenhorns, was a finalist for the 2011 Bruce Alexander Memorial Award for Best Historical Mystery. The sequel to Greenhorns, Painted Women, will go on sale in October. Both novels were published by ABQ Press.

Peter Thorpe designed the cover for Kent Anderson's new book, Territory Tales, also to be published by ABQ publishing. Anderson is a past winner of the Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story Contest. Thorpe, best known for his Tony Hillerman mystery book covers, also designed the covers for Judith Van Gieson's books published by HarperCollins.

Writing Tip: The Truth About Inspiration
by David Morrell

In my writing classes, I devote a session to daydreams, which are spontaneous messages from our subconscious. After one of my presentations, a puzzled member of the audience raised his hand and asked what a daydream was. Others were surprised, but I wasn't. Not everyone has a daydream-friendly mind. In fact, some people have been taught to repress daydreams as a distraction and a waste of time. Fiction writers, however, tend to have plenty of daydreams, and they should not only welcome those daydreams but train themselves to be aware of them. Daydreams are our primal storyteller at work, sending us scenes and topics that our imagination (i.e. our subconscious) wants us to investigate. Each day, we should devote time (I usually do this before sleeping) to reviewing our daydreams and determining which of them insists on being turned into a story. The more shocking the daydream, the more truthful about us it is, but often we push away those daydreams that make us uncomfortable when we should actually embrace them.

David Morrell, the author of numerous thrillers and three non-fiction books, created the character Rambo. A long-time student of the book business, he will speak about the latest trends in publishing at the 2011 Tony Hillerman Writers Conference.

Thank you to all who have registered for the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference! We look forward to seeing you in November. Remember: You can connect with fellow writers throughout the year on our Facebook page.

Sincerely,
Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg

Writing Tip: Stay Organized
by Tricia Fields, 2010 Winner of the Tony Hillerman Prize for The Territory

Writing a novel without a clear plan for organizing the project-from broad plot outline down to specific details-would be a nightmare for me. Here are three different methods that I use to maintain order.

1. The Spreadsheet: I use Microsoft Excel extensively. The different tabs enable the writer to store and sort a variety of information that is important to keep track of when writing a full length book. For example, I have a character tab that lists the basics for each character in the book: name, age, physical description, distinguishing traits, etc. I have another tab for businesses in town, another tab houses my scene outline, another lists ideas for future books in the series..

2. The Binder: I maintain a reference binder to store all of the printed material that can't be easily stored in an Excel file. For example, I have a section on average weather ranges in West Texas for each month of the year, a section for newspaper/magazine stories that relate to the area or the topic I'm writing about, etc.. I keep state, county and town maps that I have either copied or created myself. Detailed maps of my fictional town have proven extremely helpful in writing both my books.

3. The Notecards: Post-It notes, or stickable notecards, are another great tool for organizing the storyline. Most of my book is plotted out in a scene outline using Excel. Each scene is written on a separate row with specific details noted in the columns (POV, Characters, Purpose, etc.). Post-it notes serve a similar purpose, but they allow me to see more of the story at one time. Each scene can be summarized on a sticky note. For the BIG picture, post a piece of butcher block paper on a wall and map out each scene using sticky notes. This gives you the flexibility to easily move and add scenes as your changing plot dictates. This is also a great exercise to check the pacing in your book.

Writing Contest for Romance Writers

YourNovel.com Celebrates 20 Years:
Writing Contest Features $35,000 in Prizes
RALEIGH, NC, September 2, 2011 -- Romance writer wannabes have the chance to see their work published in a book and win one of 10 romantic getaways (total value of more than $35,000) in the YourNovel.com Personalized Romance Writing Contest to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary.
Ten winners will be selected to have their personalized, romantic stories published in an anthology called Celebrating Romance II to be sold online with YourNovel.com's other books and eBooks. Like the others, this book will be capable of being personalized so that any couple can star as the hero and heroine in the stories.
People ordering from YourNovel.com answer 23 questions about the starring couple, like names, eye and hair color, pet names they call one another, their careers, hometown, best friends, favorite perfume and favorite music. Then YourNovel.com takes those details and weaves them throughout any of their offerings.
The books are set in exotic destinations like Tahiti, Rome, the Caribbean, Africa, and at locations like luxury hotels, cruise ships, a ski resort, a dude ranch, or as a detective novel, a golf fantasy book, historical fiction, and even a vampire saga.
Contest entrants will need to do the same thing - use all 23 personal bits of information in a 2,500- to 4,000-word story in a romantic setting while employing all the techniques of romance writing, including those titillating yet tasteful love scenes that come in YourNovel.com's Wild or Mild versions of each book.
YourNovel.com held a similar contest for their 10th anniversary producing Celebrating Romance, still a popular seller. An impressive six of the 10 winning writers went on to publish full-length books. Ma rcy Thomas and Gail Gibbs have written full-length novels for YourNovel.com. LuAnne McLane (with 13 novels under her belt), Lori Pepio, Janet Welch and Regina Hammond all went on to publish books for other companies.
For the 20-year milestone, YourNovel.com's founders and co-authors J.S. Fletcher and Kathy M. Newbern (a husband/wife team using the pen name Fletcher Newbern) have teamed up with sponsors in the travel industry for prizes to inspire writers to produce award-winning work just like Fletcher and Newbern have as travel journalists, their other vocation.
Prizes valued at more than $35,000 include:
• 7 nights at Palm Island Resort, Grenadines (palmislandcaribbean.com) $5,540 value;
• 7 nights at St. James's Club & Villas, Antigua (stjamesclubantigua.com) $4,515 value;
• 7 nights at The Verandah Resort & Spa, Antigua (theverandah.com) $4,200 value;
• 5 nights at Bolongo Bay, St. Thomas, USVI (bolongobay.com) $2,354 value;
• 2 nights at Rosewood Country Inn, Bradford, NH (rosewoodcountryinn.com) value $798;
• 2 nights Ozarks Mountain Christmas, Branson, MO (explorebranson.com) $700 value;
• 2 nights at Old Edwards Inn & Spa, Highlands, NC (oldedwardsinn.com) $625 value;

• 2 nights in Raleigh, NC (VisitRaleigh.com) at Oakwood Inn B&B, (oakwoodinnbb.com) and personalized tours (total package value $500);
• A surprise destination to be announced;
• 10 complimentary copies of Celebrating Romance II valued at $1,270 to winners ranked 1-5;
• 5 complimentary copies valued at $635 to each of the winners ranked 6-10.
Fletcher says, "Whenever we explain what we do, someone invariably responds, 'I should write a book.' We agree, and now's the time."
Newbern adds, "We know from our own customers these past 19 years that there are a lot of romantic people out there. And this is their chance to create a romantic piece of fiction and see it published in a book. Plus, the prizes are terrific."
How To Enter: For information on how to enter the contest, prize details and the official rules, visit www.YourNovel.com/contest.aspx Entry deadline is Oct. 15, 2011, with winners announced by Nov. 28, 2011. The contest has no entry fee, but will be limited to 300 entries. It is open to U.S. or Canadian legal residents at least 18 years old. Entries must be submitted via email and will be judged on how well the story works for any starring couple; the plot; story originality; story location; entertaining and spicy romantic interludes; dialogue, exposition, mechanics and grammar; plus the climax.
Current Books: YourNovel.com currently offers 28 books and 16 eBooks where any couple become the hero and heroine. Novels come in hardback or paperback and the starring couple's photo can even be added to the book's cover. Paperbacks range from 150-190 pages and start at $39.95; hardbacks, 200-230 pages, start at $84.95; eBooks are 32-124 pages starting at $19.95. Photos can be added to the cover for an additional $25. NMBA will once again represent members at the annual Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Show in Denver, taking place September 30 to October 2. And we’ll be sharing prime position with the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). Richard Polese, our Senior Advisor, who will oversee our setup at the Renaissance Denver Hotel says, “This show lets us display members’ books to bookstore buyers during the largest and best book trade event in the region.” Wholesalers, distributors, sales reps and publishers and printers, as well as other trade professionals also attend the show. NMBA is compiling a catalog of participating members’ books.

To participate, make your reservation now. Call Valerie Stasik at (505) 660–6357 or email admin@nmbook.org.

Provide 50 copies of a sell-sheet for binding in our catalog—an 8.5x11-inch paper with an eye-catching design that contains the following information:
• an image of the book cover(s)
• title
• author
• publisher
• ISBN
• binding (soft/hard)
• page count
• price(s)
• ordering info
• brief author bio
The sheet may be printed on one or both sides. Please do NOT use paper heavier than 24#. Your title and book cover will grab attention better on white rather than colored paper or card stock.

Submit up to two titles for $50. You may add additional titles for $20 each. Make check payable to New Mexico Book Association.

Include one copy of each book.

Deliver the package—check, sell-sheets and book(s)—to the NMBA office at 805 Early Street, Bldg. C, Suite 205 in Santa Fe. Or mail to P.O. Box 1285, Santa Fe, NM 87504.
If you need help designing a sell-sheet, contact Mary Neighbour at lifelines@cnsp.com or Cindy Bellinger at bellinger.cindy@gmail.com.
NMBA authors and publishers who plan to attend (and we encourage you!) will need to have a show badge. Please contact Richard Polese (richard@oceantree.com) or Valerie (admin@nmbook.org) by Sept. 16 to let us know if you might attend.
Again NMBA Deadline is Friday, September 16!
