WEB Marketing for Authors
The New Mexico Book Co-op will feature Web marketing for authors at its October 23 lunch meeting. Jan Zimmermann, author of Web Marketing for Dummies, will be our speaker. The meeting begins at 11:30 and is open to anyone interested in books. The meeting will be held at the Golden Corral at 3401 Hwy 528 (just west of the intersection of Coors Blvd and Alameda Blvd). The meeting is free and the buffet lunch costs about $8 plus tax and tip.

The Holiday Fair at the Rio Rancho Inn on Saturday, November 7, 10am to 4pm in the Ballroom, is sold out, but it will be the perfect place to shop locally this year!!! Over 100 local authors are signed up tio participate. Mark your calendar and come by and shop for local books by local authors..

Entry deadline for inclusion in this new book is December 31. Theme is "Voices of New Mexico."
Essay submissions have to have some aspect of New Mexico, funny, history, biography, life in New Mexico, fiction, nonfiction. Suggestions: What was it like growing up in New Mexico? Why are New Mexicans/Santa Feans/Albuquerqueans different? Why are aliens so Roswell? A New Mexico character in New Mexico history. Why do we like green/red chile? Why were the Native Americans and Hispanics so important to New Mexico? Do you have a favorite family cuento? Do you have to get up early to enjoy the Balloon Fiesta, Indian or Spanish Markets? What part of living in New Mexico hasn’t been done to death? Entry Information ($10 fee per entry) is available HERE!
New Co-op Book Catalog is Coming!
The New Mexico Book Co-op will be announcing a new book catalog project in a few weeks. The catalog last year was extremely successful and we are going to do it again. Last year we mailed out a 48-page catalog to every bookseller and library in the region. We will announce the process for everyone to be involved in this year's catalog in the email newsletter. When you get the info do not delay. We expect that it will sell out in very short order.
Santa Fe Book Market
The Santa Fe Book Market will be starting up again this month. The event is on Saturday, October 24 at Clear Light Books at 823 Don Diego in Santa Fe. It will run from 10am to 3pm. All authors are welcome.

As all of you know we have been taking some time off in July and August but we are now gearing up for the fall.
September Lunch Meeting
The next lunch meeting of the NM Book Coop will be on Friday, September 18, 11:30 a.m. at Golden Corral Buffet, 3401 NW Hwy 528 (just west of the intersection of Coors and Alameda) Cost is $7.49 plus tax and tip. Call 505/344-9382 or email info@nmbookcoop.com to reserve a seat.
Finalists to be Announced for New Mexico Book Awards
In just a few weeks the finalists in for the 2009 awards program will be announced. We expect to make these announcements by mid to late-September.
It may sound like we are rushing it, but the banquet for the 2009 NM Book Awards is set for Friday, November 20 at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Albuquerque. Once again we expect that all the tickets for this gala event will sell out pretty quickly. So if you want to help honor this year's winners as well as be present when the winners are announced make a reservation today.
The price is $38.00 per person if you sign up by September 20. After that date it goes up to $48.00 per person. (As we have to guarantee the count at the event, there will be no refunds.)

June Lunch Meeting -- Pitch Your Book
At the next lunch meeting of the NM Book Coop, everyone will have an opportunity to "pitch your book." Friday, June 26, 11:30 a.m. Golden Corral Buffet, 3401 NW Hwy 528 (just west of the intersection of Coors and Alameda) Cost is $7.49 plus tax and tip. Call 505/344-9382 or email info@nmbookcoop.com to reserve a seat.
Anyone attending will have an opportunity to pitch their book; participants will be given 2 minutes to make a presentation on selling or pitching their book. This is a practice session which will help everyone attending on making the sales pitch to book stores.
Bring 1 copy of your newest book and make a 2-minute pitch on what the book is about and why it might be a good book for a bookstore to have and sell. The group will then offer suggestions on helping the author make a better sales presentation to bookstores. All presentations will be timed so anyone making a presentation should know exactly what they want to say about their book.

Lavender in the Village -- July 10-12
There are only a few spaces left for your books in the 2009 Lavender in The Village this July. The event is in the Village of Los Ranchos at the Barn off Rio Grande Blvd. Last year the event drew over 15,000 people. The best books for this show are cookbooks, children's books, novels, and history. There is a $10 fee per title (it goes up to $20 per title on April 15). More detailed information and application on all this event is available HERE! If you are interested in this event sign-up right away so you can get on the list.
This was a huge sell-out last year and it is expected to do the same again this year! Don't delay!

The event will be on June 27 at 1:30PM in Kaseman Hall of St. John’s Cathedral, 318 Silver SW, Albuquerque, NM. Meet authors representing a variety of genres, learn why they write, purchase books, and help some of the thousands of Albuquerque school children helped by Title One.

With an emphasis on New Mexico authors and crafts this fair will stand out as a home grown way to buy locally made and written presents.
The event is a benefit for ReadWest, a Rio Rancho literacy organization, celebrating their 20th anniversary. Michael McGarrity, Jill Lane, and Don Bullis will be featured and signing copies of their new books. Already signed up are: Reading New Mexico, LPD Press/Rio Grande Books, Enchantment Lane, Sabra Brown Stienseick, Jim Thompson, Peter Graham, Karen Walker, Cynthia Davis, and many more. Books and crafts will appeal to children and adults.
The night event at the Rio Rancho Inn features Anne Hillerman with her new book Flavors of Santa Fe and her father’s new book. Contact ReadWest at 505/892-1131 for more information and tickets.

BOOK FIESTA IN SANTA FE — NO COST TO PARTICIPATE!!!
The New Mexico Book Co-op and Clear Light Publishers in Santa Fe are banding together to organize two special book selling opportunities in Santa Fe.
Clear Light Publishers has graciously offered to host two events in Santa Fe at their new Clear Light Book Gallery on West San Mateo for the Book Awards Winners & Finalists and a book Fiesta for everyone. Please read rules carefully; space is limited so act fast. Clear Light Book Gallery is located at 851 West San Mateo (next to Open Hands). They have 3,000 square feet of display space available for us.
JANUARY 31, 2009 -- Winners & Finalists Book Fiesta
On January 31, 2009, there will be an event for Winners & Finalists in the 2008 Book Awards.
FEBRUARY 21, 2009 — Book Fiesta for Everyone
On February 21, 2009, they will have a Book Fiesta for anyone.
FREE, but you must help in promotion. There will be no cost to participate in either event. If you wish to participate you must send the email addresses of at least 25 of your potential customers (who might come to the events) in the Santa Fe area (40 email addresses if you want to participate in both events) and send these addresses to info@nmbookcoop.com. The New Mexico Book Co-op will handle the publicity for the events and will send out email announcements to people to encourage people to attend.
The events will be 10am-4pm and you are asked to be there by 9:30am to set up. No tear-down is allowed before 4pm. Each participant will have 1/2 of a table (two people to a table); if you have more than 10 titles, arrangements can be made for a larger space. A participant may bring other books as well Participation will be on a first-come basis, until space is gone. Tables will be provided for both events. You don’t have to bring tables. Participants get 75% of all book sales; 25% will go to Clear Light for handling all sales. Clear Light will handle the cash register and credit card processing. Checks for sales will be sent out a week after the event. Books must be marked with price (we highly advise removable labels that are available at stores like Staples and Office Max).
ANOTHER BOOK DISPLAY OPPORTUNITY
Clear Light Book Gallery has just re-opened in its new location on San Mateo Street in Santa Fe and is interested in having a display of New Mexico books from the Book Award Winners and from the recent New Mexico Book Catalog. They cannot guarantee sales so they want a single copy of each winner and catalog book to display on a consignment basis. If they get interested buyers, they will order more from you. James and older brother Trace Colton, stage drivers, stranded in the Sonoran Desert, and then captured by Cochise, struggle to survive. The US Army has other plans than to rescue them.

Come be a part of the biggest gala for NM books in 2008! The finalists in the 2008 NM Book Awards were announced last month and banquet tickets have been going very fast. There are some left if you have not reserved yet but if you want to attend you should make reservations very soon before all the seats are gone!. Bob Awalt was a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University (1943) and on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University from 1970 to 1990. The book is published by Rio Grande Books in Los Ranchos, New Mexico. The book is Awalt’s first. Awalt, a spry 83 years old, has already spoken to many care groups and support groups. She was also profiled in the Oak Crest resident newspaper “Village Voice.”
A personal journal of one family’s struggle with the progression of Parkinson’s disease — one can understand the medicine and the treatment for this devastating disease, but nothing prepares one for living & dying with Parkinson’s; this journal takes the reader by the hand as this disease takes control of one man’s life. More than 1,000,000 people in the United States are living, struggling, and dying with Parkinson’s Disease — 50,000 more are diagnosed in this country every year. For most of the last two years of her husband’s fifteen-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Awalt kept a journal. As a primary caregiver, she brings the reader into her concerns: Will he wander away from the apartment during the night? Will he manage to reach the toilet or will she have another major cleanup chore? Will she be able to get him back into his bed when he falls out? Over and over, she gives thanks for the washer and dryer in the apartment. Over and over we hear about that Stranger who comes, frequently at sundown, to take over her husband’s personality, a Stranger who begins to act out violently. During the final three months, when she knows she can no longer continue to care for him herself, Awalt goes daily to spend hours with him at the Medical Center. This part of her journal kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. Written for other caregivers, Awalt makes her case clear for better communication between doctor and family members. She spells out flags to watch for in other Parkinson’s patients. One wonders what her husband’s last days would have been like without her presence in the Medical Center, in spite of the good care and extremely high costs of his treatment. Jane Awalt keeps a personal diary of the final few years of her husband’s life. Both are in their 80’s, yet their courage and attitude are amazing. Most of all, it is a legacy of care, love and support as this couple goes through the end of life together. For those dealing with a relative who has Parkinson’s disease this is a must read. Requirement: Participants must have at least one short story (5,000 words or less) completed and ready to turn in by the first session Lead by David J. Corwell (his short fiction has appeared in Dead in Th13teen Flashes and Cloaked in Shadow: Dark Tales of Elves. His writing has won seven national writing awards, including a SouthWest Writers (SWW) Storyteller Award. He received his M.A. in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. David is a member of the New Mexico Book Coop and SWW, as well as a graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop and the Borderlands Press Writer's Boot Camp.). This is an opportunity to have your book at a large holiday show and we hope it is seen and bought for holiday gift giving. If you are interested in having your title there for three days the fee is $15 for the 1st title and $5 for each additional title if you sign up and reserve space before September 27. We have extended the discount fee period by two weeks. The price goes up on September 27. You are not expected to be there except to deliver and pick up your books. We will have a sales staff. The Reading Albuquerque radio show is looking for local children's authors who are interested in being a guest on the show on KKOB AM (770 AM). The show is hosted by Margaret Aragon de Chavez. The show is live every Sunday evening, 6-7pm, starting in late September through the school year. Each Sunday the show has students from local elementary schools read selections. The show also likes to highlight New Mexican authors, having them read their books, or a selection from their book (approximately 10 minutes) on the air. This is a good way to promote our local authors as the station has a 17 state range. A new book manager will be named soon for the Wyoming store. Will wants all of the authors to know that it has been a pleasure working with you and reminds anyone who has consignment books at the store that Hastings' official policy is that authors are required to check on their books every thirty days. If a book has not been checked on after 60 days, it's considered abandoned and may be discarded.

A couple of people seem to be a little confused. Entry in the Reading New Mexico Review Website is not connected with the Coop New Mexico Book Awards. They are separate so if you want to enter the book awards you need to do that separately from submitting books for possible review on READING NEW MEXICO.
BIG POETRY EVENT — WORDSTOCK II
There’s a big poetry event in the planning stages to be held in Albuquerque this September, starting Friday the 12th and ending on Sunday evening, the 15th. New Mexico Literary Arts (NMLA) is organizing the Wordstock II (small press showcase and trade show) aspect of it. Wordstock II will be held at the Harwood Museum all day Saturday (10-4ish). It will be very well attended, with lots of opportunity for writers, poets, and small presses to get the word out about their publications and make some sales. The emphasis of the festival is on poets and poetry, so those are the writers that should be encouraged to have their work represented. The tables are $20.00. If you are interested in a table, or know writers/poets that you think might be,Michelle Holland and she will send you a more formal invitation to register for a table, and more details about time and place and contact people. Publishing on Demand has finally come to New Mexico. There are a couple of printers right here in New Mexico who now offer publishing on demand. Come hear from one of them on Friday, May 23, 2008 -- 11:30 am. -- Digital Publishing on Demand with Waleed Ashoo of LithExcel. Waleed Ashoo of LithExcel in Albuquerque will provide us with information about new capabilities in digital publishing on demand at his company. This is a great opportunity to sell your books (and keep all the money) to a growing community of readers. Plus, it is an absolutely fantastic chance to network with some of the best in the business. The Chama Book Fair will be Saturday, June 7th at Cookin' Books from 10 AM to 3 PM. The keynote author this year is John Nichols, author of Milagro Bean Field War among other books. His sidekick author will be Taylor Streit, fly fishing guide and author of several fishing books. The author's seminar will take place from Friday, June 6th to Sunday June 8th. Reservations are $99 each. That cost includes: Registration and Welcome Gift, Welcome Reception Tea, a special Friday evening event, a shared table (with one other author) at the Book Fair, 100% retention of all sales at the Book Fair, ticket to the Author's Seminar, which will be presented by John Nichols, and one ticket to the EHL Chuckwagon Suppershow. Guests are welcome to the Chuckwagon for an additional fee. There will be various lodging options available in Chama as well, with discounted author rates. Taylor Streit will also be offering at a cost a fly fishing class on the Rio Chama on Sunday morning, which is an optional event. Of course there are many other optional activities available as well, like the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, horseback riding etc. -- all available in the area either pre or post the Seminar. Last year, Lavender in the Village brought thousands of people to the Village of Los Ranchos. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local authors who want to have their books displayed for the public. The best part is you don’t have to even be there for your books to sell. All you do is sign up and you will be given info on when and where to drop off your books and then you pick up whatever has not sold on Sunday afternoon at the festival just before it closes. Join in the fun and be a part of the largest activity in the Village. We want books that appeal to kids, adults, cookbooks, histories, novels, and of course lavender books! ELDORADO BOOK FAIR —— EVERYTHING DONE RIGHT, BUT..!!
Over four dozen authors took part in the recent Eldorado Book Fair. There was loads of publicity — notices appeared in Santa Fe Reporter, Rio Grande Sun, Santa Fe New Mexican, Craigslist, Vistas (which went to every household in Eldorado), Eldorado Sun, fliers handed-out at the Eldorado Flea Market, and fliers handed out at the Eldorado Farmers Market. Participating authors sent out notices to their family, friends, and customers. We tried to cover all the bases in the Santa Fe area. The location was nice, but we just did not get the traffic that everyone had hoped for. Some participants did okay, but most did not. The economy, and especially the cost of gas, seems to be having a significant impact on attendance. As discouraging as this event may have been, we will continue to try and arrange new and valuable venues for all of us to sell display and sell our books. If we don’t keep trying we will never be able to make any change. If you have ideas as to how to make these types of events better (or even places where we might try) please me us know. We are willing to try almost any idea at least once.
