Book signings for Don Bullis' New Book

February 1, 2009 - 2-4pm - Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, book signing
For better or worse, politics have always played an important part in New Mexico life, beginning with the first Spanish explorers and conquerors in the 16th century. New Mexico Spanish Colonial Governors Juan Bautista de Anza and Fernando de la Concha, made and maintained peace with the Comanche, in the later years of the 18th century. Mexican Governor Albino Pérez, on the other hand, was murdered by his constituents in 1837. American Territorial Governor Lew Wallace left New Mexico in favor of Turkey in the face of his inability to deal with the violence of the Lincoln County War. Judge Joab Houghton had no legal training, and it showed. Judge Kirby Benedict consumed enough alcohol that President Abe Lincoln felt compelled to comment. Texas Judge Spruce Baird attempted to singlehandedly claim most of New Mexico for the Lone Star State. Judge David Leahy was shot, but not killed, by newspaper editor Carl Magee in a Las Vegas, New Mexico, hotel lobby. This book is a sampler of New Mexico political figures beginning in 1598. Most are uniquely New Mexican.
Published in collaboration with Albuquerque Westerners and with financial support from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Statehood Centennial Grant.

Reading Pele’s Realm to the Residents of Good Sam

Roberta Summers will begin reading a serialized version of her novel, Pele’s Realm to the residents of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec at 3:30 on Wednesday, February 11th. During an evening of Bluegrass music Summers attended to support her guitar-playing husband’s performance, Summers chatted with Cindy Iacovetti, the activities director of the facility and they arranged for the reading which will be 30 to 40 pages every afternoon until the book is finished.

Summers’ novel about life on The Big Island of Hawaii has burst upon the literary scene. Pele’s Realm is high adventure and tension during a time when the volcano erupted continually, thunder rolled down the valleys and the earth shook. Based on an actual murder of an acquaintance that happened in the early 1970’s the book is semi-autobiographical.

Summers lived in Hawaii for twenty-five years and on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano for five of those years. She writes about the loss of innocence when the drug culture invades Hawaii. Hawaiian Mafia activity escalates as they seek new places for growing pakalolo to supply the growing demand for Kona Gold, one of the highest quality marijuana plants. As you turn the pages you will follow Maggie and John Kovak as they tramp across lava flows, peer down into a live volcano, evade Mafia thugs who think Maggie knows too much, and make love under a secluded waterfall.

Comments: “I couldn’t put it down. I felt like I was there on the Big Island. It was like a trip to Hawaii.” Nancy Brewer
“Pele’s Realm was great; I started it and could not stop! You are to be congratulated . . . fabulous. A good story, interesting local details—all in all—a real winner.”
William D. Mett, PhD

Pele’s Realm was released in late November. Since then, Summers has completed four successful booksignings at the Farmington Museum, Andrea Kristina’s Book Store and Café, La Fiesta Grande Restaurant and the San Juan College Enterprise Center. Coming up are booksignings at Hastings in Farmington on March 7th from 1 to 4 p.m., the Bayfield Library in April and others. The book is available at www.silverjackpublishing and www.amazon.com as well as area bookstores, the Farmington Museum and the San Juan Regional Medical Center Gift Market.

Sandi Ault's Wild Sorrow

WILD SORROW
by Sandi Ault
RELEASES MARCH 2009
Berkley Prime Crime Hardcover
ISBN 13: 978-0-425-22583-7

WILD SORROW continues the adventures of the series' rough and ready heroine, a BLM resource protection agent named Jamaica Wild. The story opens with a dramatic scene as Jamaica, on horseback, and her wolf, Mountain, track a wounded mountain lion in a blinding snowstorm. Forced to take shelter from the storm, she and Mountain, the abandoned wolf she is raising (who is as much a central character in the WILD novels as Jamaica), stumble on the desecrated body of a former school matron at an abandoned Indian school. The woman was remembered for beating and humiliating the Indian children, and the FBI quickly assumes they have a revenge killing on their hands. Jamaica isn't so sure, and chilling stories from her Tanoah Pueblo friends about their boarding school experiences pique her curiosity. As Jamaica works to find and save the wounded mountain lion and her cubs, the killer thinks she knows all. Stalked, threatened, and attacked, Wild and her wolf narrowly escape repeated attempts on their lives as Jamaica races to solve the mystery.

Sandi Ault is the author of the WILD Mystery Series, and the heir apparent to Tony Hillerman. No one but Ms. Ault writes about the Southwest with such rich, filmic description, or brings to life its wild beauty and native cultures with such depth and clarity.
Ault's debut, WILD INDIGO, won the Mary Higgins Clark Award in 2008, the first debut novel nominated for that award. WILD INDIGO garnered critical acclaim in the national media, including the New York Times: "[A] striking debut...Scenes of the high, dry, glittering landscape are as clean as sun-bleached bone, and there are thrills galore."
Ms. Ault's sophomore outing, WILD INFERNO, was named one of the Best Books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly and Library Journal and was the only mystery to make both lists. Both novels won starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, who said of Ault's work: "Reviewers and readers will draw parallels between Ault's enlightening, well-researched debut and the mysteries of Tony Hillerman, Nevada Barr, and Aimee and David Thurlo; this is fine because she is that good."

New Mexico in 1801 Reviewed in New Mexico Magazine
"The title says it all: For this collection, author Rick Hendricks gathered and translated 26 reports written about New Mexico in 1801 by the territory’s Roman Catholic clergy. In that year, the Consulado (Merchant Guild) of Guadalajara requested that the priests send information about the “state and circumstances of agriculture, industry, and commerce” in the New Mexico territory, with the hope that they could use the data to foster economic growth. The result is an intimate view of the territory, from the status of the roads to the clash between the Spanish and Pueblo cultures. The reports, which Hendricks admits that he has translated for historical accuracy rather than for ease of reading, are for the serious student of history who wants to consult primary (or nearly so) sources. Hendricks, the author or co-author of 16 books, was an editor for the Vargas Project, a historical editing project dedicated to publishing the official papers of Governor Don Diego de Vargas (1643-1704). He currently works in the Archives and Special Collections Department at New Mexico State University, where he also teaches Latin American history." – New Mexico Magazine, January 2009

Co-authors Daria Labinsky and Stan Hieronymus bring a beautifully designed, profusely illustrated, and superbly presented compendium showcasing the life and works of Frank Applegate and his influence. Stan Hieronymus focuses upon Applegate's personal family history to life writing with an especial authority as his own father was Frank Applegate's nephew.
