,Talk BackState’s Youth Disproportionately Affected by Tobacco Use
ALBUQUERQUE—The New Mexico Media Literacy Project announces a Call for Entries for its fourth annual Talk Back to Big Tobacco! Script and Storyboard Contest. The contest is seeking scripts written by New Mexico youth for 30-second radio and television commercials aimed at preventing tobacco use by children and teens.
With a chance to win $500 cash, the contest allows middle and high school students to use their creative voices to tell the deadly truth about tobacco. Scripts can focus on the dangers of smoking, the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing tactics, or why so many young people choose to live tobacco-free lives.
In New Mexico, smoking rates are higher among high school students (26%) than among adults (21%).
“We’re especially interested in scripts aimed at youth from low-income households and rural communities, Native American youth, LGBT youth, and youth with disabilities,” says Windy Gay, the contest director. “These young people are disproportionately affected by tobacco use in New Mexico.”
Gay points out that over 30% of Native American youth in the state use commercial tobacco. “And among youth from low-income families, smoking rates climb to about 40%”.
Contest rules allow New Mexico residents between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate. Entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2009.
A panel of media and tobacco prevention experts will select eight contest winners—four TV storyboards and four radio scripts. In addition to the $500 cash prizes, winners have a chance to win $2,500 if their ad is chosen for statewide radio or TV broadcast.
The winning radio scripts will be produced at KUNM-FM, and the winning TV storyboards will be produced at Albuquerque Community Access Channel 27. The completed ads will premiere at the Oscar-style Fame & Shame Awards in Albuquerque on May 8, 2010.
The Talk Back to Big Tobacco! Script and Storyboard Contest is sponsored by the New Mexico Media Literacy Project, and funded by the New Mexico Department of Health’s Tobacco Use Prevention and Control (TUPAC) Program.

Mayfield to conduct Mrs. Iptweet Playshops in Mail Art and MapMaking at O'Doodles Toy Store and the TreeHouse Play Cafe
Santa Fe, NM.------Author/illustrator/performer Barbara Mayfield will read excerpts from her first children's novel, The Magical Mrs. Iptweet and Me, as part of the first annual Chestnut Hill Book Festival to be held July 10 -12.
As part of her readings, she'll be conducting free playshops in Mail Art and MapMaking, in the style of Aunt Belle and Prudence Fish Hornby, two of the stars in The Magical Mrs. Iptweet and Me.
"Mrs. Iptweet", a novel for children ages 8 and up, won a New Mexico Discovery Award in 2006. Heroine Prudence Fish Hornby, age nine-and-a-half, and her new neighbor, the quirky artist and Parade Specialist Mrs. Iptweet tap the power of the ground, study the magic and power of names and, against all odds, pull together the first annual Midsummer's Day Mythical Creatures Parade on boring old Durham Street.
Mayfield will be also be performing as Roving Puppeteer with her marionette, Beauty the Pink Flamingo, during the festival before and after her reading/signing times.
Mayfield was born and raised in Philadelphia. She lived for 15 in the West Mt. Airy section of the city on Durham Street, the setting for The Magical Mrs. Iptweet and Me. She studied at the Tyler School of Art and is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She now lives near Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she works as a writer, a S.A.G. actor, an artist and as a puppeteer for Teatro Duende at the New Mexico Museum of Art.

June Lunch Meeting -- Pitch Your Book
At the next lunch meeting of the NM Book Coop, everyone will have an opportunity to "pitch your book." Friday, June 26, 11:30 a.m. Golden Corral Buffet, 3401 NW Hwy 528 (just west of the intersection of Coors and Alameda) Cost is $7.49 plus tax and tip. Call 505/344-9382 or email info@nmbookcoop.com to reserve a seat.
Anyone attending will have an opportunity to pitch their book; participants will be given 2 minutes to make a presentation on selling or pitching their book. This is a practice session which will help everyone attending on making the sales pitch to book stores.
Bring 1 copy of your newest book and make a 2-minute pitch on what the book is about and why it might be a good book for a bookstore to have and sell. The group will then offer suggestions on helping the author make a better sales presentation to bookstores. All presentations will be timed so anyone making a presentation should know exactly what they want to say about their book.

The event is in the Village of Los Ranchos at the Barn off Rio Grande Blvd. Last year the event drew over 15,000 people. The best books for this show are cookbooks, children's books, novels, and history. There is a $10 fee per title (it goes up to $20 per title on April 15). November 7 Book Fair in Rio Rancho
The Holiday Fair at the Rio Rancho Inn on Saturday, November 7, 10am to 4pm in the Ballroom, will be one of the first opportunities to sell books and crafts for the holidays. With an emphasis on New Mexico authors and crafts this fair will stand out as a home grown way to buy locally made and written presents.
The event is a benefit for ReadWest, a Rio Rancho literacy organization, celebrating their 20th anniversary. Michael McGarrity, Jill Lane, and Don Bullis will be featured and signing copies of their new books. Already signed up are: Reading New Mexico, LPD Press/Rio Grande Books, Enchantment Lane, Sabra Brown Stienseick, Jim Thompson, Peter Graham, Karen Walker, Cynthia Davis, and many more. Books and crafts will appeal to children and adults.

Mark David Gerson’s The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write was named a Silver Medalist in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, IPPY Award, in the "writing/publishing" category.
