After a year's hiatus, WORDHARVEST has restructured the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference and moved it to Santa Fe, N.M. In this newsletter, we preview parts of the conference and offer you a successful writing tip from Tony Hillerman. The program, Nov. 12-13, includes a day focused on developing characters and creating dialog under the guidance of Margaret Coel, a comprehensive session on the business of writing with Bill O'Hanlon, and an evening with author (and former CIA agent) Valerie Plame Wilson. In response to your requests, we've added a manuscript critique. Complete information and registration is available here. In addition, we plan to announce the 2011 Tony Hillerman Prize (Deadline for entries: June 1!) You will learn how to give characters distinct personalities, viewpoints, and motivations that will make them come alive on the page. Coel will show how dialog is a crucial devise to transform characters into multi-dimensional people--and keep the story moving. Using non-intimidating, hands-on practice, she will help students learn to write dialog that feels like conversation and develop techniques that allow characters to act, react, suffer, change, prevail and, finally, live on in the minds of the reader.
The New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Wind River mystery series, Margaret Coel sets her stories among the Arapahos on Wyoming's Wind River Reservation. Her novels have won many awards and been on numerous bestseller lists including the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. Author. publisher and editor Judith Van Gieson has agreed to help aspiring authors refine their first chapters and improve their synopses. Judith will read a synopsis and up to 25 pages of the first chapter of the manuscripts and meet with writers privately during the conference to discuss their work, focusing on strenghts and on areas that could use some improvement. The offer is open to writers of both fiction and non-fiction and includes a written critique, a half-hour private session with Judith and a two-hour class on writing first chapters. Critques are available at a discount to those who register for at least one day of the conference.
June 1 Deadline for $10,000 Hillerman Prize
The Tony Hillerman Prize for best first mystery, created and co-sponsored by WORDHARVESTand St. Martin's Press, honors the memory of New Mexico author Tony Hillerman.The contest is open to previously unpublished book length manuscript (no less than 220 typewritten pages or approximately 60,000 words).The story must be set in the Southwestern United States and the author must be unpublished in the mystery genre. (Most self-published novels are allowed.) Entries must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2010. The complete guidelines and entry form are here. Good luck!
Successful Writing Tip:
Author Tony Hillerman often quipped that writer's block "was spelled L-A-Z-Y."
However, if a novel he had in the works stalled, he would drive out to the landscape where the story took place, usually the Navajo reservation. This emersion in the scene, and time away from the computer, usually reinvigorated his writing process. Try it yourself.

Book on Fray Angelico Chavez
Phyllis Morgan's new book debuts at Conference on Fray Angélico Chávez
NEW BOOK ON FRAY ANGÉLICO CHÁVEZ TO DEBUT AT THE CHÁVEZ CONFERENCE APRIL 10, 2010
LPD Press/Rio Grande Books of Los Ranchos, New Mexico, will debut a new book, "Fray Angelico Chávez: A Bibliography of Published Works 1925-2010, A Chronology of His Life 1910-1996" by award-winning author, Phyllis S. Morgan, at the Fray Angélico Conference in the New Mexico History Museum Library in Santa Fe on Saturday, April 10, 2010, from 10am to 4:30pm. The event marks the 100th birthday of Fray Angélico Chávez. Chávez is considered to be the most prolific Hispanic writer in the U.S. in the twentieth century.
The first biography of Fray Angelico Chávez by Morgan was published in 1980 and is out of print. This updated book contains all of the recent publications and data on Chávez. LPD Press/Rio Grande Books will also have available "Wake For A Fat Vicar" by Dr. Tom Chávez & Fray Angélico Chávez and "Tradition & Heritage" by Virginia Ortiz that highlights the murals by Fray Angélico Chávez in the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church in Peña Blanca.
The event is free and open to the public and it is advised to enter the conference by Washington Avenue. For information of the books contact LPD Press at 505/344-9382.

Santa Fe, NM. October, 2009 -- Many contests judge books by content; few credit the look of a book. The First Annual “Southwest Book Design & Production Awards for Excellence” is looking for a few good books.
Hoping to raise the bar and set standards of book excellence, this new contest will recognize creativity and quality of book design, and production. A panel of long-standing professionals in the industry will judge the entries.
Books must be published, designed or produced in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah or West Texas.
Entry fee is $30 first category and $15 for each additional category for NMBA members; $45 first category and $20 for each additional category for non-members—send two copies of each title submitted. There are ten categories (see brochure attached). Deadline for receipt of books, entry form and check, no later than February 15, 2010. Early Bird discount if mailed by October 31, 2009.
This contest takes to task the old adage “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” How a book looks and feels is what captures potential buyers. Having a book recognized for an award helps establish credibility among industry professionals.

New Mexico in 1801 Reviewed in New Mexico Magazine
"The title says it all: For this collection, author Rick Hendricks gathered and translated 26 reports written about New Mexico in 1801 by the territory’s Roman Catholic clergy. In that year, the Consulado (Merchant Guild) of Guadalajara requested that the priests send information about the “state and circumstances of agriculture, industry, and commerce” in the New Mexico territory, with the hope that they could use the data to foster economic growth. The result is an intimate view of the territory, from the status of the roads to the clash between the Spanish and Pueblo cultures. The reports, which Hendricks admits that he has translated for historical accuracy rather than for ease of reading, are for the serious student of history who wants to consult primary (or nearly so) sources. Hendricks, the author or co-author of 16 books, was an editor for the Vargas Project, a historical editing project dedicated to publishing the official papers of Governor Don Diego de Vargas (1643-1704). He currently works in the Archives and Special Collections Department at New Mexico State University, where he also teaches Latin American history." – New Mexico Magazine, January 2009
