Reading Pele’s Realm to the Residents of Good Sam

Roberta Summers will begin reading a serialized version of her novel, Pele’s Realm to the residents of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec at 3:30 on Wednesday, February 11th. During an evening of Bluegrass music Summers attended to support her guitar-playing husband’s performance, Summers chatted with Cindy Iacovetti, the activities director of the facility and they arranged for the reading which will be 30 to 40 pages every afternoon until the book is finished.

Summers’ novel about life on The Big Island of Hawaii has burst upon the literary scene. Pele’s Realm is high adventure and tension during a time when the volcano erupted continually, thunder rolled down the valleys and the earth shook. Based on an actual murder of an acquaintance that happened in the early 1970’s the book is semi-autobiographical.

Summers lived in Hawaii for twenty-five years and on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano for five of those years. She writes about the loss of innocence when the drug culture invades Hawaii. Hawaiian Mafia activity escalates as they seek new places for growing pakalolo to supply the growing demand for Kona Gold, one of the highest quality marijuana plants. As you turn the pages you will follow Maggie and John Kovak as they tramp across lava flows, peer down into a live volcano, evade Mafia thugs who think Maggie knows too much, and make love under a secluded waterfall.

Comments: “I couldn’t put it down. I felt like I was there on the Big Island. It was like a trip to Hawaii.” Nancy Brewer
“Pele’s Realm was great; I started it and could not stop! You are to be congratulated . . . fabulous. A good story, interesting local details—all in all—a real winner.”
William D. Mett, PhD

Pele’s Realm was released in late November.
