New Mexico Book Association Revamps Web Site

NMBA is delighted to present our new website! Our web address remains the same—www.nmbook.org—but we have a remodeled appearance and enhanced functionality. As you browse the pages, new navigational tools will make your movement through the site fun, smooth, and efficient. You will encounter all the features that you have come to know and love about www.nmbook.org, with these new additions:
• An interactive, printable Calendar of Events, with views by the day, week, or month. Our calendar submission form has also been updated, and we hope you will let us know if we can make additional improvements here. As before, calendar submissions are not automatic; they will be batch posted at least weekly.
• New online forms and PayPal options to make your payments for Classifieds, dues, and workshops more convenient.
• A Classified Ads page, where members and others can advertise their skills, look for jobs, or sell an item. For book sales, we’ve included a separate category. The fee per submission is just $10 for the first month and $5 for each month thereafter. The “clock” on your monthly submission begins at the time of posting, not at the time of submission (Your submissions do not appear instantaneously.)
• Plus RSS feeds and social network sharing, and more to come...
Explore the new www.nmbook.org to see what the new site offers. If you have a good idea about improving future versions of the website, or experience any technical difficulties while viewing the site, please email Mary Neighbour: office@nmbook.org.

Attention all publishers, book designers and producers, editors, and authors: your entries may now be submitted until March 19, 2010 to be considered for the Southwest Book Design & Production Awards for Excellence! Choose your best-looking books published in 2008 and 2009 and send them to us now; you don’t need to be an NMBA member to qualify! All details and the entry form are on the www.nmbook.org website. Contact Jim Mafchir with questions: (505) 988-7214, westernedge@santa-fe.net.

OTHER AWARDS DEADLINES ARE NEAR!

1. Moonbeam Children's Book Awards - Early-Bird Entry deadline Feb. 13: Now is the time to enter your award-worthy children's book into the fourth annual Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards, honoring the year's best children’s books, authors, and illustrators. The program accepts entries with 2009 or 2010 copyrights or with release dates between January 1, 2009 and August 21, 2010. Entry is open to authors, illustrators, and publishers of children’s books written in English or Spanish and intended for the North American market. These awards bring an opportunity for recognition to independent authors and publishers who have a hard time breaking through to win library association awards like the Newbery and Caldecott.
Early-bird entry fee is $75 per title, per category (until Feb. 13), with increases to $85 and then $95 as the final deadline of August 21 approaches.
Online entry form: https://secure.independentpublisher.com/secure/moonbeam/entry.php.

Calling all Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah and
West Texas Publishers, Book Designers, and Authors!

Santa Fe, NM. October, 2009 -- Many contests judge books by content; few credit the look of a book. The First Annual “Southwest Book Design & Production Awards for Excellence” is looking for a few good books.
Hoping to raise the bar and set standards of book excellence, this new contest will recognize creativity and quality of book design, and production. A panel of long-standing professionals in the industry will judge the entries.
Books must be published, designed or produced in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah or West Texas.
Entry fee is $30 first category and $15 for each additional category for NMBA members; $45 first category and $20 for each additional category for non-members—send two copies of each title submitted. There are ten categories (see brochure attached). Deadline for receipt of books, entry form and check, no later than February 15, 2010. Early Bird discount if mailed by October 31, 2009.
This contest takes to task the old adage “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” How a book looks and feels is what captures potential buyers. Having a book recognized for an award helps establish credibility among industry professionals.
Download our brochure and entry form (attached in this email), or go to www.nmbook.org. Finalists to be announced April 30, 2010.
Wouldn’t “Winner, Best Cover and Jacket Design, 2008-2009” be a nice addition to the accolades for your book?
