July New Mexico Book Co-op News
Calling All Children's Book Authors
Have you published a children's book? Would you be willing to read a portion of it live on the radio in Albuquerque? Kathy Barco is compiling a list of authors who would be interested in taking part in a Sunday afternoon radio show that happens almost every Sunday during the school year. If this appeals to you, please e-mail Kathy your contact information and she will pass it along to the show's coordinator.
NOTE: You won't be paid, but you will get to plug your book on the air. And think of the fun you'll have telling your friends to tune in! Contact Kathy Barco at barcok@newmexico.com if you are interested.
July Co-op Meeting
As you should know there are no meeting of the Book Co-op during the summer. So our next meeting will be on September 23 at our regular location (Golden Corral on the Westside). Our speaker will be Don Bullis, who is the NM Centennial Author. He will be talking about the program for NM Centennial, the Centennial authors, and his newest book projects.
Voices in Abiquiu
Linda Dunning has organized a special event for the authors/contributors to the NM Book Co-op's "Voices of New Mexico" book. On Saturday, July 16 at the Abiquiu Inn from 1-3pm, authors will be talking about their entries in the book and will be available for signings. Come and support our great local NM authors.
Literacy Day at the Main Albuquerque Library
This is an opportunity for all of us to sell books, support literacy, and support the Albuquerque Library. This has not be done on this scale before so we do not know what to expect but if it is to be successful YOU have to tell family and friends who can come to make an appearance and enjoy. It is an especially kid friendly event!
Thursday, September 8, 2011, 11am to 4pm
The book sale area on the bottom floor will feature publishers, authors, and books of all kinds for sale. This is a very large area across from the auditorium and the story pit where a lot of the activities are taking place. There are a limited number of tables available and it is first come. Because the fee is so inexpensive ($20@) an author/publisher may have more than one table so if a group of friends want tables together it would be a good idea to have one person get them. All sellers have to fill out the City form to sell books and that is why we can not have last minute sign ups. We will give your name to the Library to send you by email a form that you can send back to them. Don’t wait to do this because the tables may be gone at this price!
Facts for the sale: • There will be advertising. • Food/drink is only allowed in the book sale room – a good thing • You may not set up until 10am because the library doesn’t open until then. You can set up between 10-11am and be ready for customers at 11am. NO late set ups allowed. • You may sell other things at your table. • Big names are speaking at the Fair – we just can’t tell you about it yet but so far Joe Hayes, Anne Hillerman & Don Strel, Nasario Garcia, & Slim Randles have confirmed. • All participating authors/publishers must pay and reserve in advance so the City can send you a form to fill out making you legal. No last minute shows! • Parking is available – 2 hours FREE at structure across the street or meters. You have to feed the meters. You must get your parking structure ticket validated at the front desk. We will see if vendors can have something else too. • A cute coffee shop sells drinks, lunches on premise. You can bring food & drink. • Checks must accompany reservations and made out to Friends of the Albuquerque Library. They must be mailed to NM Mexico Book Co-op, 925 Salamanca NW, Los Ranchos, NM 87107. • Exhibitors MAY NOT LEAVE AND PACK UP EARLY!! This is rude and may eliminate you from further events. • Albuquerque Library reserves the right to find materials objectionable to families and return rental fee. • No refunds except if dictated from Albuquerque Library. • Please have with you a tax/business registration in case you are asked. Remember this is a City property and they can ask! The worst case scenario – you can be shut down and asked to leave – you must charge tax or have a sign saying tax is included in book prices. • Bags are good.
