Letters - to - the - Editor
Hi, Carolyn;
You asked for ideas on ugly words and jargon to avoid. My current un - pet phrase is "a number of," which I think users believe sounds better than "several." The reason why I hate the term is that it's so unhelpful for the reader. That number could be anything from three to millions — who knows? I think the user of this term often is thinking of a number that's more than two but an unimpressive number more than two (like maybe three).
Whenever I run across the term in my editing, I substitute "several,"
which at least gives the reader the idea that the number being spoken of is relatively small.
That was fun to rant! I'll keep you in mind as I run across more.

Selling Books from Own Web Sites Vs Amazon
This came in as a response to my recent blog post on Amazon. Because it is from an independent publishing expert, Michael N. Marcus, I thought my subscribers would like to see his views, especially because I hear so often that small publishers and independent authors are eschewing Amazon.

I can't understand why writers want to sell books from their own websites (or from vanity publishers' websites) instead of from Amazon or B&N, etc.
The 20% that the online booksellers keep on a $20 book is $4.
If a self - publisher ships it from the publisher's own inventory, the flat - rate Priority Mail fee is $4.85 (more than what would be paid to Amazon).
The fee for shipping one pound by Media Mail is $2.38 (less than what would be paid to Amazon), but the service is slower than Priority Mail and does not include delivery confirmation. Confirmation adds about 70 cents.
Lightning Source charges from $3.80 to over $40 to drop - ship a book to a publisher's customer. However, the shipping fee is built into the printing fee for orders placed through online booksellers. (Printing and shipping a 300 - page book to an Amazon customer costs $5.40.)
So, Priority Mail costs a little bit more than what Amazon or B&N or other online booksellers would keep, and Media Mail costs a little bit less. The numbers change depending on the cover price and weight of a book.
But when you consider that many millions of potential buyers can find a book by searching on Amazon.com or B&N, but almost no one will find the book on an author's own site without a lot of PR and paid advertising to send them there, relying on the big booksellers should be a no - brainer.

Galimatias (noun)
Pronunciation: [gal - uh - `mey - shee - uh s]
Definition: Gibberish, foolish talk; unintelligible speech.
Usage: The world galimatias, which itself sounds unintelligible, simply means unintelligible speech. It can be used in reference to speaking gibberish (or “gobbledygook”), although it is often used to describe a rambling and incoherent speech. Perfectly normal patterns of speech that fall outside the purview of an individual, such as legalese or a foreign language, may also be appropriately described as galimatias.
Suggested Usage: If you can’t understand what someone else means, whether they’re speaking a language you don’t speak or just using words outside of your vocabulary, introduce a vocab word of your own: galimatias! Whatever the context, crying “galimatias” is a fun way to discredit the words or arguments of others. Best of all, it doesn’t sound particularly mean; just kind of silly. (It is, therefore, to be used liberally around people way smarter than you.)
Etymology: When it first came into use in English, galimatias was also spelled gallimatias. It is French in origin. In fact, the word means the same thing in French—utter nonsense—as it does in English. It has been suggested that the word is a popular variation of the French term galimafrée, which means a medley. The English word gallimaufry, which means a mix or jumble, reflects this origin.

COMMENTS: E - Book Pricing Goes Haywire

The honest and industrious are wiped out while the gangsters, profiteers and speculators walk away with millions.” ~ Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize - winning reporter for the New York Times = Amazon.Com, the whopping book and merchandise site, has long found that prices above $9.99 on an e - book frustrate their customers. Now publishers are forcing e - book prices to go up to $12.99 and $14.99. In the New York Times article, “E - Book Price Increase May Stir Readers’
Passions”
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/11/technology/11reader.html?scp=1&sq=e - books&st=cse by Motoko Rich and Brad Stone on February 10, 2010, Mark Gompertz, executive vice - president of Simon and Schuster, said, “There are people who don’t always understand what goes into an author writing and an editor editing and a publishing house with hundreds of men and women working on these books.”
Gompertz’ comment seems to say that publishers have to pay out as much for production of e - books as they do for printed books. I don’t see that. I also don’t see anymore going to authors. Please correct me, noble writers, if I am wrong.
Here’s my question. Why in the middle of a recession, when people have LESS disposable income and, sometimes, no job, do publishing companies choose THIS MOMENT to up prices on an e - book market already struggling?
With all the consumer perception of business as the greedy - guts who give huge bonuses to their upper echelon and tell their customers to “eat cake,” do publishers go this route at this time? Frankly, my dear, I don’
t understand.
Amazon customers have made it understood by comments on the Amazon site and in the New York Times article that they don’t intend to pay what they consider inflated prices for e - book. They’ll turn to libraries or to other activities other than reading.
Where does this leave writers? If their e - books don’t sell, then the market for them will dry up. Authors will have one less market for their writing. Is Amazon shooting its own Kindle in the foot? Is Apple going to see iPads dry up out of the starting block? It’s possible.
In the New York Times article, Joel Waldfogel, a professor of business and public policy at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, said, “I would be scared to death about a culture of piracy taking hold. I wouldn’t mess around with price increases.”
That’s another consideration. Protecting against e - book piracy will cost publishers more. Maybe prices will mount yet again. Maybe people will quit buying e - books all together. In that case, bye - bye Kindle and all the others like it.
Remember, there’s always the second - hand bookstore or the local library.
Find one in your neighborhood and frequent it. We may not be able to afford anything else. If you’re a writer, like I am, I’m sorry.

This is a running feature for the poets among us and those who would like to try writing poetry but feel, well, inadequate about the writing or the promotion. Please send in your poetry tips and resources for this section.
I am often asked to endorse or give a blurb to a fellow poet. Recently Helena Harper asked me if she could re - use portions of a review I did for her book Family and More. Of course, I was honored. Asking is a very nice way to keep in touch with those who have supported one with an endorsement. But it isn't necessary. Once someone has reviewed or endorsed a book, those words become property of the author. He or she may quote wherever they want. Those of us who do endorsements know that we benefit, too - - and we take pleasure in helping writers. There is no greater honor than being included on a cover of a book and I thank all those who have asked me to do so.

I’ve worked with two writers as they wrote an entire novel. This is how they did it.
* One novelist came from an engineering background. She put her book together using intricate outlining, Excel spreadsheets and a great deal of research.
*The other novelist wrote with the idea/outline in his head. He put together a very good book just from knowing the ending of his tale and explaining how the story got to the ending.
Now, I am beginning work on my own novel. I’ve taken into account the two different methods these authors used, plus I’ve read a lot on how others have put together what they write. My conclusion? Every writer is unique.
Everyone has an individual way to get to the story.
So far, I’m using three resources as guides as I write. One is Larry Brooks’ e - book, Story Structure - Demystified. Another is Carolyn Howard - Johnson’s The Great First Impression Book Proposal: Everything You Need to Know About Selling Your Book in Twenty Minutes or Less, which I will need as I write to define my market, and Bev Walton - Porter’s book, Sun Signs for Writers which helps me build my characters. I’ll use other sources as I write but these are the ones I am keeping in mind in the beginning and throughout the process. Yes, you have to pay for them but their ALL worth it.
