What: PR-101 for Authors: Get Your Name Out There!

Four seasoned experts in book publicity and promotion will share their collective wisdom in "PR 101 for Authors." It includes all authors and new small presses will need to know about "getting your name out there" – from letting the public know who you are to ways you can create impact with the title, content and timing of your book.

When: February 2, 1-3pm.

Where: The Writers Room, Southwest Literary Center, 826 Camino del Monte Rey, Santa Fe.

Who: The panel includes Jane Blume of Desert Sky Communications; Barbara Mayfield of Get the Word Out: Publicity for Authors; Joan Schweighardt, editor, book consultant, publicist; and Karen Villanueva of Karen Villanueva Author Services.

Panelists:

+ Jane Blume will open with "PR Basics: Differentiating Your Book or Story." Jane is the award-winning owner of Desert Sky Communications, which New Mexico Business Weekly ranked among the top four public relations firms in our state. She helps clients gain visibility and by "getting the right messages to the right audiences." Typically, Jane's clients are leaders in their fields or have aspirations to achieve that distinction. A Certified Management Consultant (CMC), Jane and her firm enjoys a 90% placement rate for news releases, guest columns, articles, and letters to the editor.



+ Barbara Mayfield will speak about "The Art of the Interview: The Importance of Being Prepared for Media Appearances." Writer, actress and publicist, Barbara worked for 15 years in marketing and promotion for arts organizations before launching Get the Word Out: Publicity for Authors in 2005. She has booked tours and extensive media placements in more than 25 cities nationwide. She teaches the ins and outs of successful media appearances, coaching clients in voice and presentation style, as well as media etiquette. Author of Mrs. Iptweet and the Amazingness of Life (2008), Barbara believes that PR is about letting one’s light shine.



+ Joan Schweighardt will present "A Novel Approach to Publicizing Fiction." Joan is author of three contemporary novels and a multi-award winning historical novel, and is founder of GreyCore Press, publisher of fiction, memoir and children’s books. Joan’s writers have garnered a multitude of awards including Independent Publisher "Book of the Year," Barnes & Noble "Discover Great New Writers," Borders "Original Voices" and "Top Six Read-to-Me" titles, and ForeWord Magazine "Editors Choice Book of the Year." Her authors have appeared on TV and radio around the country. Currently Joan works as a freelance book publicist, editor and ghostwriter and occasional agent. She is now also a partner in a CD recording company.



+ Karen Villanueva, will tell you "What You Need to Know about Press Kits" and "Approaching Media, Book Stores and Other Venues." Karen has been a publicist since 1985 and has operated Karen Villanueva Authors Services, specializing in book promotion, since 1993. Based in Albuquerque, Karen offers a la carte services: developing press kits, setting up and publicizing book events, full services for regional and national book tours with advance and support publicity, and escorting touring best-selling authors. An award-winning publicist in the recording industry, Karen's clients have appeared on CNN, Larry King Live, in USA Today, The New York Times, New Mexico publications, and many more.
