LPD Press/ Grande Books of Los Ranchos, New Mexico, has announced a new book to go with the blockbuster exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art that opens July 19, 2009, A Century of Masters. The book and exhibit shows the work and the biographies of fifteen New Mexican masters who were honored by the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.:
George López of Córdova, Cleofas Vigil of Arroyo Hondo, Helen Cordero of Cochiti Pueblo, Esther Martínez of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Charlie Carrillo of Santa Fe, Ramón José López of Santa Fe, Irvin Trujillo of Chimayó, Eliseo & Paula Rodríguez of Santa Fe, Frances Varos Graves of Arroyo Seco, Emilio & Senaida Romero of Santa Fe, Margaret Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo and Lorenzo & Roberto Martínez of Albuquerque.
The book highlights the careers of extraordinary New Mexican artists: storytellers, santeros, musicians, oral historians, potters, and linguists. New Mexico has been blessed with fifteen awardees - highest per capita of any other state. The book has letters by Governor Richardson, Cultural Affairs Secretary Stuart Ashman, and MOIFA Director Marsha Bol. The exhibit is curated by Nicolasa Chávez. The exhibit runs until 2011.

For better or worse, politics have always played an important part in New Mexico life, beginning with the first Spanish explorers and conquerors in the 16th century. New Mexico Spanish Colonial Governors Juan Bautista de Anza and Fernando de la Concha, made and maintained peace with the Comanche, in the later years of the 18th century. Mexican Governor Albino Pérez, on the other hand, was murdered by his constituents in 1837. American Territorial Governor Lew Wallace left New Mexico in favor of Turkey in the face of his inability to deal with the violence of the Lincoln County War. Judge Joab Houghton had no legal training, and it showed. Judge Kirby Benedict consumed enough alcohol that President Abe Lincoln felt compelled to comment. Texas Judge Spruce Baird attempted to singlehandedly claim most of New Mexico for the Lone Star State. Judge David Leahy was shot, but not killed, by newspaper editor Carl Magee in a Las Vegas, New Mexico, hotel lobby. This book is a sampler of New Mexico political figures beginning in 1598. Most are uniquely New Mexican.
Published in collaboration with Albuquerque Westerners and with financial support from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Statehood Centennial Grant.

"The title says it all: For this collection, author Rick Hendricks gathered and translated 26 reports written about New Mexico in 1801 by the territory’s Roman Catholic clergy. In that year, the Consulado (Merchant Guild) of Guadalajara requested that the priests send information about the “state and circumstances of agriculture, industry, and commerce” in the New Mexico territory, with the hope that they could use the data to foster economic growth. The result is an intimate view of the territory, from the status of the roads to the clash between the Spanish and Pueblo cultures. The reports, which Hendricks admits that he has translated for historical accuracy rather than for ease of reading, are for the serious student of history who wants to consult primary (or nearly so) sources. Hendricks, the author or co-author of 16 books, was an editor for the Vargas Project, a historical editing project dedicated to publishing the official papers of Governor Don Diego de Vargas (1643-1704). He currently works in the Archives and Special Collections Department at New Mexico State University, where he also teaches Latin American history." – New Mexico Magazine, January 2009

Jane Kriete Awalt, a resident of Oak Crest in Parkville, Maryland, is the author of a new book “The Stranger Comes At Sundown: Living & Dying With Parkinson’s Disease,” which was released in May. The book is a journal of Mrs. Awalt caring for her husband Bob, who died of Parkinson’s Disease in August, 2007. Bob Awalt was a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University (1943) and on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University from 1970 to 1990. The book is published by Rio Grande Books in Los Ranchos, New Mexico. The book is Awalt’s first. Awalt, a spry 83 years old, has already spoken to many care groups and support groups. She was also profiled in the Oak Crest resident newspaper “Village Voice.”
A personal journal of one family’s struggle with the progression of Parkinson’s disease — one can understand the medicine and the treatment for this devastating disease, but nothing prepares one for living & dying with Parkinson’s; this journal takes the reader by the hand as this disease takes control of one man’s life. More than 1,000,000 people in the United States are living, struggling, and dying with Parkinson’s Disease — 50,000 more are diagnosed in this country every year. Jane Awalt shares her personal journal of living and dying with her husband’s disease as a gift to others, helping us understand the stages and progression of this devasting illness. Bob’s story unfolds slowly like the disease, often taking startling turns and twists.

For most of the last two years of her husband’s fifteen-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Awalt kept a journal. As a primary caregiver, she brings the reader into her concerns: Will he wander away from the apartment during the night? Will he manage to reach the toilet or will she have another major cleanup chore? Will she be able to get him back into his bed when he falls out? Over and over, she gives thanks for the washer and dryer in the apartment. Over and over we hear about that Stranger who comes, frequently at sundown, to take over her husband’s personality, a Stranger who begins to act out violently. During the final three months, when she knows she can no longer continue to care for him herself, Awalt goes daily to spend hours with him at the Medical Center. This part of her journal kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. Written for other caregivers, Awalt makes her case clear for better communication between doctor and family members. She spells out flags to watch for in other Parkinson’s patients. One wonders what her husband’s last days would have been like without her presence in the Medical Center, in spite of the good care and extremely high costs of his treatment. Several unclear passages might have been reworked. Some of the repetitiveness could have been eased. But for all that, an insightful read. -- www.readingnewmexico.com

Jane Awalt keeps a personal diary of the final few years of her husband’s life. Both are in their 80’s, yet their courage and attitude are amazing. Most of all, it is a legacy of care, love and support as this couple goes through the end of life together. For those dealing with a relative who has Parkinson’s disease this is a must read. ENTRY DEADLINE FOR THE NEW MEXICO BOOK AWARDS FAST APPROACHING
The Early Deadline for entries in the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards is fast approaching and we have already received over 100 entries. The early deadline is May 31, 2008 for entries; the entry fee for early submissions is $30 per title per category. There are some 35 categories for the book awards. The complete list of categories and the application information can be found at http://nmbookaward.com. After May 31, the entry fee will increase to $40. In addition to the regular entry categories, Borders stores in New Mexico are sponsoring The People’s Choice Awards. Announcing a new book review site for New Mexico books -- READING NEW MEXICO
Sabra Brown Steinsiek, former book reviewer for POSH New Mexico Magazine, published author, and freelance writer, is launching a new online book review site for books by New Mexico Authors, books with a New Mexico illustrator, books with a New Mexico setting, and books from a New Mexico Publisher. ENTRY DEADLINE FOR THE NEW MEXICO BOOK AWARDS FAST APPROACHING
The Early Deadline for entries in the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards is fast approaching and we have already received over 100 entries. The early deadline is May 31, 2008 for entries; the entry fee for early submissions is $30 per title per category. There are some 35 categories for the book awards. In addition to the regular entry categories, Borders stores in New Mexico are sponsoring The People’s Choice Awards. Last year, Lavender in the Village brought thousands of people to the Village of Los Ranchos. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local authors who want to have their books displayed for the public. The best part is you don’t have to even be there for your books to sell. All you do is sign up and you will be given info on when and where to drop off your books and then you pick up whatever has not sold on Sunday afternoon at the festival just before it closes. Chama Book Fair, Mothers Day Book Fair, Writer's Workshop Taos
DEADLINE RAPIDLY APPROACHING FOR THE DISCOUNTED RATE FOR CHAMA BOOK FAIR
The Chama Book Fair will be Saturday, June 7th at Cookin' Books from 10 AM to 3 PM. The keynote author this year is John Nichols, author of Milagro Bean Field War among other books. His sidekick author will be Taylor Streit, fly fishing guide and author of several fishing books. The author's seminar will take place from Friday, June 6th to Sunday June 8th. It will continue to be available to all authors at a cost of $75; reservations after April 15 are $99 each. That cost includes: Registration and Welcome Gift, Welcome Reception Tea, a special Friday evening event, a shared table(with one other author) at the Book Fair, 100% retention of all sales at the Book Fair, ticket to the Author's Seminar, which will be presented by John Nichols, and one ticket to the EHL Chuckwagon Suppershow. Guests are welcome to the Chuckwagon for an additional fee. There will be various lodging options available in Chama as well, with discounted author rates. Taylor Streit will also be offering at a cost a fly fishing class on the Rio Chama on Sunday morning, which is an optional event. Of course there are many other optional activities available as well, like the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, horseback riding etc. -- all available in the area either pre or post the Seminar. The New Mexico Book Co-op and the New Mexico Book Association have teamed together to sponsor the Mother’s Day Book Fair at The Village in Eldorado, on the east side of Santa Fe on Saturday, May 10 from 10am to 3pm. The Mother’s Day Book Fair will feature authors and publishers from all across New Mexico. The book fair will be held indoors in The Village at Eldorado (there are two buildings of shops) on Caliente Road and Avenida Vista Grande across from the supermarket just off U.S. 285. Participants can provide their own tables and chairs or they can be provided by the fair sponsors. In addition to the Book Fair, there will be a Growers Market and music and entertainment outdoors. The Vista Grande Public Library will be involved in the promotion for the event. The fee to participate in this book fair is $10 if you provide you own table (6-foot max.) and chairs; it is $20 if you want the sponsors to provide the table (6-foot) and two chairs. There are also a few tables that are smaller and they are available at $15 for a 40-inch round table (with 1 chair) or $10 for a 1-foot x 2-foot table (with 1 chair); these smaller tables are perfect to display one or two books. If you provide your own 6-foot table or get one from the fair sponsors you may share with one other author/publisher. Space will be assigned for tables in advance based on when you submit your reservation. All monies generated from the fees will be used to promote the book fair. They are looking for new books published in the last 12 months on mothers, women, and poetry. If you have a book that fits in any of these categories and that has been published in the last 12 months (since January 2007) please send us a cover image (300 dpi jpeg, 5x6 inches), title, author name, publisher, hard or softcover, price, and a max 50-word description of the book — any entries for books outside the required pub date, with a description over 50 words, or with cover images not as 300 dpi jpegs (5x6) will not be considered for inclusion. MOTHERS DAY BOOK FAIR FILLING UP FAST — DON’T WAIT TO LONG TO SIGN UP!
The New Mexico Book Co-op and the New Mexico Book Association have teamed together to sponsor the Mother’s Day Book Fair at The Village in Eldorado, on the east side of Santa Fe on Saturday, May 10 from 10am to 3pm. The Mother’s Day Book Fair will feature authors and publishers from all across New Mexico. The book fair will be held indoors in The Village at Eldorado (there are two buildings of shops) on Caliente Road and Avenida Vista Grande across from the supermarket just off U.S. 285. Participants can provide their own tables and chairs or they can be provided by the fair sponsors. In addition to the Book Fair, there will be a Growers Market and music and entertainment outdoors. The Vista Grande Public Library will be involved in the promotion for the event. The fee to participate in this book fair is $10 if you provide you own table (6-foot max.) and chairs; it is $20 if you want the sponsors to provide the table (6-foot) and two chairs. There are also a few tables that are smaller and they are available at $15 for a 40-inch round table (with 1 chair) or $10 for a 1-foot x 2-foot table (with 1 chair); these smaller tables are perfect to display one or two books. If you provide your own 6-foot table or get one from the fair sponsors you may share with one other author/publisher. Space will be assigned for tables in advance based on when you submit your reservation. All monies generated from the fees will be used to promote the book fair. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local authors who want to sell their books. There are also spaces for signings. Join in the fun and be a part of the largest activity in the Village. The NM Book Co-op is working with the Holy Ghost School in Albuquerque to organize a Meet the Author Book Fair event on Sat. March 8 from 10-5pm in celebration of the opening of the their new school library. About 30 authors have signed up and there is space for a few more if you hurry. There will be live entertainment and ethnic food available. The event is free to the public. Authors and publishers can sell books and have book signings. JUNE 7 -- CHAMA BOOK FAIR
The Chama Book Fair will be Saturday, June 7th at Cookin' Books from 10 AM to 3 PM. The keynote author this year is John Nichols, author of Milagro Bean Field War among other books. His sidekick author will be Taylor Streit, fly fishing guide and author of several fishing books. The author's seminar will take place from Friday, June 6th to Sunday June 8th. It will continue to be available to all authors at a cost of $75. That cost includes: Registration and Welcome Gift, Welcome Reception Tea, a Friday evening event (tbd), a shared table(with one other author) at the Book Fair, 100% retention of all sales at the Book Fair, ticket to the Author's Seminar, which will be presented by John Nichols, and one ticket to the EHL Chuckwagon Suppershow. Guests are welcome to the Chuckwagon for an additional fee. There will be various lodging options available in Chama as well, with discounted author rates. Taylor Streit will also be offering at a cost a fly fishing class on the Rio Chama on Sunday morning, which is an optional event.
