CHAMA BOOK FAIR SIGNINGS SATURDAY JUNE 5
The 6th Annual Chama Book Fair, June 4 & 5, is featuring a number of new books in addition to author David Morrell of Santa Fe. Morrell will share his “Rambo” books fame and his many other titles in a free documentary, Friday, June 4, at Cookin’ Books in Chama at 7 pm.
The Chama Book Fair is 11am to 3pm at Cookin’ Books in Chama on Saturday, June 5.
Don Bullis will be signing New Mexico’s Finest: Peace Officers Killed in The Line of Duty; Jill Lane of Chama, is signing Spanish/English Primer with her Oso Bear series; Sabra Brown Steinsiek of Reading New Mexico, will be signing The Tale of the Pronghorned Cantaloupe and the second edition of Timing is Everything; Karen Kerschen will sign copies of By The Whim of the Wind; Carla Aragon, formerly of KOB TV, is signing Dance of the Eggshells; and Cynthia Davis from the Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque will be signing Mary, My Love. Books available will appeal to children as well as adults and are on all subjects.
The public is also invited free to hear and discuss with Morrell “Telling The New Mexico Story,” 4:30pm at the Elkhorn Lodge Pavilion in Chama. Morrell will talk about the influences on his books from memoirs, action – thrillers and mysteries, how-to-write, and literature criticisms. The Chama Book Fair is sponsored by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council and others.

Albuquerque Public School Libraries will have a special vendor display on March 10 just in time for their spring book ordering. The NM Book Co-op will have a table for the vendor display. This is your opportunity to display and possibly get book orders from APS. The cost of $5 per title and you provide 1 copy of the book and 75 fliers with ordering information. You do not need to be in attendance. There are a limited number of display spaces available so you must sign up immediately.
The deadline to sign up for this event is Friday January 22. Email us at info@nmsantos.com if you want to sign up.
Last Call to Sell Books at Outdoor Show
Only a few people showed interest in the Book Co-op booth at the upcoming Bob Gerding’s Outdoor Adventure Show in Albuquerque. This is a huge show featuring all types of outdoor related projects. You do not have to be present. We will do all the selling. At least six more people need to participate or we will cancel this selling opportunity.
If you are interested in having your titles sold the fee is $20 for the first title and $10 for the second title. The dates of the show are February 12, 13, & 14 at the Expo New Mexico. Terms are 90% of the sale price. Hot subjects may be fishing, hunting, hiking, cooking/food, outdoors, landscapes, gardening, sightseeing New Mexico.
Exact drop-off and pick-up times will be announced for those participating.
The deadline for this event is Friday January 22. If we do not get enough interest the co-op will not be participating in this event.

ENTRY DEADLINE FOR THE NEW MEXICO BOOK AWARDS FAST APPROACHING
The Early Deadline for entries in the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards is fast approaching and we have already received over 100 entries. The early deadline is May 31, 2008 for entries; the entry fee for early submissions is $30 per title per category. There are some 35 categories for the book awards. The complete list of categories and the application information can be found at http://nmbookaward.com. After May 31, the entry fee will increase to $40. In addition to the regular entry categories, Borders stores in New Mexico are sponsoring The People’s Choice Awards. Interested readers can place ballots in designated boxes in any of the Borders New Mexico stores for their favorite books ever written about New Mexico or by a New Mexico author or publisher. Last year, Lavender in the Village brought thousands of people to the Village of Los Ranchos. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. Sabra Brown Steinsiek, former book reviewer for POSH New Mexico Magazine, published author, and freelance writer, is launching a new online book review site for books by New Mexico Authors, books with a New Mexico illustrator, books with a New Mexico setting, and books from a New Mexico Publisher. Sabra expects to launch the website on September 1st and will be accepting books for review at the June meeting of the New Mexico Book Coop*. A mailing address will announced at a later time. Publishing on Demand has finally come to New Mexico. There are a couple of printers right here in New Mexico who now offer publishing on demand. Come hear from one of them on Friday, May 23, 2008 -- 11:30 am. -- Digital Publishing on Demand with Waleed Ashoo of LithExcel. Waleed Ashoo of LithExcel in Albuquerque will provide us with information about new capabilities in digital publishing on demand at his company. ELDORADO BOOK FAIR —— EVERYTHING DONE RIGHT, BUT..!!
Over four dozen authors took part in the recent Eldorado Book Fair. There was loads of publicity — notices appeared in Santa Fe Reporter, Rio Grande Sun, Santa Fe New Mexican, Craigslist, Vistas (which went to every household in Eldorado), Eldorado Sun, fliers handed-out at the Eldorado Flea Market, and fliers handed out at the Eldorado Farmers Market. Participating authors sent out notices to their family, friends, and customers. We tried to cover all the bases in the Santa Fe area. The location was nice, but we just did not get the traffic that everyone had hoped for. Some participants did okay, but most did not. The economy, and especially the cost of gas, seems to be having a significant impact on attendance. As discouraging as this event may have been, we will continue to try and arrange new and valuable venues for all of us to sell display and sell our books. If we don’t keep trying we will never be able to make any change. If you have ideas as to how to make these types of events better (or even places where we might try) please me us know. We are willing to try almost any idea at least once.

NM MUSEUM FOUNDATION SELECTS AUTHORS FOR NM WOMEN"S AUTHOR FAIR.
The New Mexico Museum Foundation has selected 76 women from New Mexico to participate in the upcoming New Mexico Women Authors' Book Festival which will be held in Santa Fe on September 27, 2008. The complete list of authors participating is available at http://nmbookcoop.com/NMWABW.pdf.
AMAZON TO REQUIRE POD PUBLISHERS TO PRINT WITH BOOKSURGE
Amazon has notified some print-on-demand publishers that if they wish to continue selling books directly through their site, they must use the Amazon-owned BookSurge to print their books. Amazon currently places orders through the POD publishers' distributors. But soon, publishers will be required to convert their files to a format compatible with BookSurge, which will then print the books in-house, so they can be "married" with other products for faster and less expensive shipping for the customer. So far, one site reports, no books have been taken off Amazon's "shelves." Amazon released an open letter, explaining the move: "Simply put, we can provide a better, more timely customer experience if the POD titles are printed inside our own fulfillment centers. In addition, printing these titles in our own fulfillment centers saves transportation costs and transportation fuel." We aren’t sure yet how this might effect books produced through Lula, Lightning Source or other POD printers. We will keep you posted as this develops to see how it may impact us at the local level.

ENTRY DEADLINE FOR THE NEW MEXICO BOOK AWARDS FAST APPROACHING
The Early Deadline for entries in the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards is fast approaching. The early deadline is May 31, 2008 for entries; the entry fee for early submissions is $30 per title per category. There are some 35 categories for the book awards. The complete list of categories and the application information can be found at http://nmbookaward.com. After May 31, the entry fee will increase to $40. In addition to the regular entry categories, Borders stores in New Mexico are sponsoring The People’s Choice Awards. Interested readers can place ballots in designated boxes in any of the Borders New Mexico stores for their favorite books ever written about New Mexico or by a New Mexico author or publisher. MAY CO-OP LUNCH TO FEATURE PUBLISHING ON DEMAND
Publishing on Demand has finally come to New Mexico. There are a couple of printer right here in New Mexico who now offer publishing on demand. NM BOOK COOP BOOK CATALOG SOLD OUT!
The response to the Co-op Book Catalog was so strong that it has sold out. The catalog will be finished over the next several weeks and when completed it will be mailed to ever book seller and library in the region.

Last year, Lavender in the Village brought thousands of people to the Village of Los Ranchos. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local authors who want to have their books displayed for the public. The best part is you don’t have to even be there for your books to sell. All you do is sign up and you will be given info on when and where to drop off your books and then you pick up whatever has not sold on Sunday afternoon at the festival just before it closes. Join in the fun and be a part of the largest activity in the Village. We want books that appeal to kids, adults, cookbooks, histories, novels, and of course lavender books! NM MUSEUM FOUNDATION SELECTS AUTHORS FOR NM WOMEN"S AUTHOR FAIR.

AMAZON TO REQUIRE POD PUBLISHERS TO PRINT WITH BOOKSURGE
Amazon has notified some print-on-demand publishers that if they wish to continue selling books directly through their site, they must use the Amazon-owned BookSurge to print their books. Amazon currently places orders through the POD publishers' distributors. But soon, publishers will be required to convert their files to a format compatible with BookSurge, which will then print the books in-house, so they can be "married" with other products for faster and less expensive shipping for the customer. So far, one site reports, no books have been taken off Amazon's "shelves." Amazon released an open letter, explaining the move: "Simply put, we can provide a better, more timely customer experience if the POD titles are printed inside our own fulfillment centers. In addition, printing these titles in our own fulfillment centers saves transportation costs and transportation fuel." We aren’t sure yet how this might effect books produced through Lula, Lightning Source or other POD printers. We will keep you posted as this develops to see how it may impact us at the local level.

His sidekick author will be Taylor Streit, fly fishing guide and author of several fishing books. The author's seminar will take place from Friday, June 6th to Sunday June 8th. The Albuquerque Alibi and New Mexico PrimeTime are running a series of columns featuring new local books.
They are looking for new books published in the last 12 months on mothers, women, and poetry. If you have a book that fits in any of these categories and that has been published in the last 12 months (since January 2007) please send us a cover image (300 dpi jpeg, 5x6 inches), title, author name, publisher, hard or softcover, price, and a max 50-word description of the book — any entries for books outside the required pub date, with a description over 50 words, or with cover images not as 300 dpi jpegs (5x6) will not be considered for inclusion. The New Mexico Book Co-op and the New Mexico Book Association have teamed together to sponsor the Mother’s Day Book Fair at The Village in Eldorado, on the east side of Santa Fe on Saturday, May 10 from 10am to 3pm. The Mother’s Day Book Fair will feature authors and publishers from all across New Mexico. The book fair will be held indoors in The Village at Eldorado (there are two buildings of shops) on Caliente Road and Avenida Vista Grande across from the supermarket just off U.S. 285. Participants can provide their own tables and chairs or they can be provided by the fair sponsors. In addition to the Book Fair, there will be a Growers Market and music and entertainment outdoors. The Vista Grande Public Library will be involved in the promotion for the event. The fee to participate in this book fair is $10 if you provide you own table (6-foot max.) and chairs; it is $20 if you want the sponsors to provide the table (6-foot) and two chairs. There are also a few tables that are smaller and they are available at $15 for a 40-inch round table (with 1 chair) or $10 for a 1-foot x 2-foot table (with 1 chair); these smaller tables are perfect to display one or two books. If you provide your own 6-foot table or get one from the fair sponsors you may share with one other author/publisher. Space will be assigned for tables in advance based on when you submit your reservation. All monies generated from the fees will be used to promote the book fair. CALLING ALL WOMEN AUTHORS
The Museum of New Mexico Shops is organizing the first New Mexico Women’s Book Festival on Milner Plaza on Museum Hill, Santa Fe, New Mexico; it is set for Saturday September 27, 2008. This event, modeled on the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival, held in annually in September on the mall in Washington, D.C., will celebrate the joy of reading and the creative power of New Mexico’s women writers. The festival will feature seven pavilions - “Fiction,” “Poetry,” “Mysteries and Fantasy”, “History and Biography,” “Art,” “Home and Family,” and “Children” where 70 authors will read and discuss their books and their craft in thirty minute intervals. Additionally, authors will be signing books and books will be sold by the MNMFShops during the day on Milner Plaza. Special activities, readings and educational games will be available for children and their parents. There is no fee to participate. If you are a woman author and are interested in participating email John Stafford, Director of Retail Operations, Museum of New Mexico Foundation at john@museumfoundation.org. He will be sending out applications in mid-March for all those who are interested. They will select about 70 authors to participate.

The Chama Book Fair will be Saturday, June 7th at Cookin' Books from 10 AM to 3 PM. The keynote author this year is John Nichols, author of Milagro Bean Field War among other books. His sidekick author will be Taylor Streit, fly fishing guide and author of several fishing books. The author's seminar will take place from Friday, June 6th to Sunday June 8th. It will continue to be available to all authors at a cost of $75; reservations after April 15 are $99 each. That cost includes: Registration and Welcome Gift, Welcome Reception Tea, a special Friday evening event (“Sunset Express with John Nichols” Train Ride Special on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad with Picnic Supper and John Nichols Reading), a shared table(with one other author) at the Book Fair, 100% retention of all sales at the Book Fair, ticket to the Author's Seminar, which will be presented by John Nichols, and one ticket to the EHL Chuckwagon Suppershow. Guests are welcome to the Chuckwagon for an additional fee. There will be various lodging options available in Chama as well, with discounted author rates. Taylor Streit will also be offering at a cost a fly fishing class on the Rio Chama on Sunday morning, which is an optional event. Of course there are many other optional activities available as well, like the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, horseback riding etc. -- all available in the area either pre or post the Seminar. CALLING ALL WOMEN AUTHORS
The Museum of New Mexico Shops is organizing the first New Mexico Women’s Book Festival on Milner Plaza on Museum Hill, Santa Fe, New Mexico; it is set for Saturday September 27, 2008. This event, modeled on the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival, held in annually in September on the mall in Washington, D.C., will celebrate the joy of reading and the creative power of New Mexico’s women writers. The festival will feature seven pavilions - “Fiction,” “Poetry,” “Mysteries and Fantasy”, “History and Biography,” “Art,” “Home and Family,” and “Children” where 70 authors will read and discuss their books and their craft in thirty minute intervals. Additionally, authors will be signing books and books will be sold by the MNMFShops during the day on Milner Plaza. Special activities, readings and educational games will be available for children and their parents. There is no fee to participate. If you are a woman author and are interested in participating email John Stafford, Director of Retail Operations, Museum of New Mexico Foundation at john@museumfoundation.org. He will be sending out applications in mid-March for all those who are interested. They will select about 70 authors to participate.

The NM Book Co-op is working with the Holy Ghost School in Albuquerque to organize a Meet the Author Book Fair event on Sat. March 8 from 10-5pm in celebration of the opening of the their new school library. About 30 authors have signed up and there is space for a few more if you hurry. There will be live entertainment and ethnic food available. The event is free to the public. Authors and publishers can sell books and have book signings. MAY 10 — MOTHERS DAY BOOK FAIR IN ELDORADO
The New Mexico Book Co-op and the New Mexico Book Association have teamed together to sponsor the Mother’s Day Book Fair at The Village in Eldorado, on the east side of Santa Fe on Saturday, May 10 from 10am to 3pm. The Mother’s Day Book Fair will feature authors and publishers from all across New Mexico. The book fair will be held indoors in The Village at Eldorado (there are two buildings of shops) on Caliente Road and Avenida Vista Grande across from the supermarket just off U.S. 285. Participants can provide their own tables and chairs or they can be provided by the fair sponsors. In addition to the Book Fair, there will be a Growers Market and music and entertainment outdoors. The Vista Grande Public Library will be involved in the promotion for the event. The fee to participate in this book fair is $10 if you provide you own table (6-foot max.) and chairs; it is $20 if you want the sponsors to provide the table (6-foot) and two chairs. There are also a few tables that are smaller and they are available at $15 for a 40-inch round table (with 1 chair) or $10 for a 1-foot x 2-foot table (with 1 chair); these smaller tables are perfect to display one or two books. If you provide your own 6-foot table or get one from the fair sponsors you may share with one other author/publisher. Space will be assigned for tables in advance based on when you submit your reservation. All monies generated from the fees will be used to promote the book fair. It was a two day event and because it was such a great opportunity last year for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening the event up to authors from the village. This year’s Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local authors who want to sell their books. There are also spaces for signings. Join in the fun and be a part of the largest activity in the Village.
