The New Mexico Library Association 2009 Convention will be held in Albuquerque (April 22-24) -- The Book Coop will have a book booth at the convention and you can display your books at the show. We are looking for new books that would appeal to libraries. The cost to display books is $10 per title. To sign up CLICK HERE!
In addition, we will be putting together information packets on books that may appeal to libraries. Sabra Brown Stienseck is coordinating this information -- these will include books that are in the booth for sale as well as others that are not on display. The cost to be included in the information packets is $3.00 plus you need to provide 200 copies of a flier on your book(s). You must deliver your fliers to Sabra at the March 27 meeting to be included.

The second New Mexico Women Authors’ Book Festival will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 beginning at 11:00AM and closing at 5:00PM at Milner Plaza on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During the event 50-60 New Mexican women authors will be speaking about their work or their craft in seven different presentation pavilions. These pavilions are listed below with the number authors that will be chosen in each category:
Poetry – 11 Poets (there will also be a “Poetry Out Loud” reading session for additional poets)
Fiction – 10 Authors
Creative Arts – 10 Authors
History and Biography – 10 Authors
Health, Home and Family – 10 Authors
Children – 9 Authors

New Mexico Library Foundation Donations Sought
The non-profit New Mexico Library Foundation (NMLF) supports libraries in New Mexico by allocating funds to libraries of all types and to non-profit organizations that directly benefit libraries. The NMLF is holding a couple of fund-raising events in April. One will be a raffle at the New Mexico Library Association (NMLA) annual conference being held in Albuquerque April 22-24, and the other will be a silent auction at a reception at the LOEX International Conference being held at the Hyatt in Albuquerque April 30. (LOEX is a professional organization for individuals in the world of library instruction and information literacy). Kathy Barco (NM Book Co-op member and vice-chair of the NMLF Board of Trustees) is asking Co-op members to donate signed copies of their books for these fund-raising events. The books will be on display for conference attendees to look at prior to the raffle and silent auction. Books can be passed along to Kathy at the March Co-op meeting (Friday, March 27, Golden Corral). For more information, or alternate methods of getting the books to Kathy, e-mail her at barcok@newmexico.com If you make a donation, please include your mailing address and the value of the book, and don’t forget to sign your book! Your name will appear in the list of Donors in an upcoming NMLF newsletter and you will receive a thank-you note detailing your donation.
Musing With Ruthe Francis
Our friend and colleague Ruthe Francis will share some of her thoughts in a regular column here in NM Book Co-op News. Here are some new thoughts and observations about books:
Larry McMurtry recently published a memoir on books entitled Books. (I just had to write that sentence.) For those of us who are interested in where used books end up, this is a tale of McMurtry's joyous journey in the art of scouting, buying, and selling books for the past half-century. He now has over 300,000 volumes in his business in Archer City, Texas. He also documents the changes that publishing has gone through, especially the rapidity of change during these past few years.
Book TV covers non-fiction authors on the week-ends on cspan. If you have acesss to this channel I highly recommend it for recently publlished books, author information, book panels, and articles about the book business. This past week-end they high-lighted Wonder Book used books in Maryland. The warehouse has over one million books that are sold through their website (wonderbook.com), Amazon and e-bay. They even sell used books by color: a shelf of yellow books anyone? Booktv.org lists each week-end's lineup.

More Borders Cuts: 742 Store Managers and Supervisors Nationwide
Borders is cutting "less than 3 percent" of their in-store workforce across the country, eliminating 679 jobs at their superstores, mostly by "reducing the number of manager and supervisor positions." They note that "no changes were made at the general manager level--the top position in each store--but in the majority of Borders locations, one or two other leadership positions, such as sales managers, inventory managers, training supervisors and merchandise supervisors, were eliminated as the company resets its superstore management structure to correspond to sales volume on a store-by-store basis." Similar changes to manager and supervision positions at Waldenbooks are eliminating another 63 positions. CEO Ron Marshall calls it "a necessary step as we streamline and focus our payroll investment on the sales floor" and "making sure that payroll investments align with the reality of sales."
Barnes & Noble Acquires Fictionwise
Barnes & Noble has acquired Chatham, N.J.-based e-book retailer Fictionwise Inc., which owns and operates Fictionwise.com and eReader.com, for $15.7 million in cash. Barnes & Noble said it plans to use Fictionwise as part of its overall digital strategy.
Ten Speed Press Acquired By Random House
Ten Speed Press, a Berkeley, Calif.-based independent publisher of nonfiction books, has been acquired by Random House Inc. The purchase was completed late last month and the terms of the agreement between the two companies.

Book Fair Celebrates Grand Opening of Flaying Star in Bernalillom, New Mexico
Book Fair Celebrates Grand Opening of Flaying Star in Bernalillo
The new Flying Star Cafe in Bernalillo will have its Grand Opening Labor Day weekend in Bernalillo August 30, 31 and September 1, 2008. The New Mexico Book Co-op is having a Book Fair/Store to celebrate the New Mexico Wine Festival and the opening of Flying Star Cafe in Bernalillo.
The new Flying Star Cafe is located directly across the street from the NM Wine Festival and they anticipate 30,000 people coming, many walking down from the Road Runner station which is a block behind the new Flying Star Cafe. The space for the book fair has been donated by Flying Star Café.
There will be twenty-five book signings during the three-day event:

The new Flying Star Cafe in Bernalillo will have its Grand Opening Labor Day weekend in Bernalillo August 30, 31 and September 1, 2008. The New Mexico Book Co-op is having a Book Fair/Store to celebrate the New Mexico Wine Festival and the opening of Flying Star Cafe in Bernalillo.
The new Flying Star Cafe is located directly across the street from the NM Wine Festival and they anticipate 30,000 people coming, many walking down from the Road Runner station which is a block behind the new Flying Star Cafe. The space for the book fair has been donated by Flying Star Café.
There will be twenty-five book signings during the three-day event:
