Shoes for Santo Niño Reviewed in NM Magazine

The Shoes for the Santo Niño, written by Peggy Pond Church with illustrations by Charles M. Carrillo, was reviewed in New Mexico Magazine.
New Mexico Magazine says:
"In the Roman Catholic tradition, and particularly among Hispanic and Native American Catholics in northern New Mexico, Santo Niño (the Christ child) is thought to heal children. Figurines of the saint are believed to leave church altars at night to visit ailing children—the devout leave children’s shoes at his shrines to ensure that he can continue his travels. In this story, Julianita, the youngest of 11 siblings, diligently crafts a pair of shoes for Santo Niño. Unlike he family, Julianita believes that the saint departs the church not to help children, but to gambol about the countryside—just as she dearly wishes she could do herself. Once Julianita delivers the shoes, Santa Niño springs to life, and together the two explore the llano (plains), in this magical tale rich in cultural significance. Tales such as this have been shared among New Mexican families for centuries, and this one is well worth picking up so that your own family can continue the tradition. Originally written in the 1930s by famed New Mexico author Peggy Pond Church, probably best known for The House at Otowi Bridge: The Story of Edith Warner and Los Alamos (University of New Mexico Press, 1959), Shoes for the Santo Niño was lost for almost seven decades. Here it is brought back to life with watercolor illustrations by Santa Fe santero Charles M. Carrillo. Recommended for children five to seven." -- May 2010

University of New Mexico Press News

Two UNM Press titles and the Press’s Pasó por Aquí Series on Nuevomexicano Literary Heritage were honored at the Historical Society of New Mexico’s (HSNM) 2009 New Mexico History Conference in Santa Fe on Saturday, May 2nd.
No Settlement, No Conquest: A History of the Coronado Entrada by Richard Flint received the Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez Award for historic survey and research. Combining research from European and American archives with recent archaeological evidence, Flint’s comprehensive history reshapes the Coronado expedition, revealing new connections, exposing misinformation, and adding crucial elements previously ignored.

Richard Flint is research associate in history at the Center for Desert Archaeology, Tucson, Arizona. His publications include The Coronado Expedition: From the Distance of 460 Years (UNM Press) and Documents of the Coronado Expedition, 1539-1542: “They Were Not Familiar With His Majesty, nor Did They Wish To Be His Subjects.”
Paula Moore’s Cricket in the Web: The 1949 Unsolved Murder that Unraveled Politics in New Mexico received the Gaspar Perez de Villagra Award for outstanding publication. Containing elements of mystery, conflict, power, fear, sex, and politics, Moore’s exhaustively researched study of the Cricket Coogler case provides the first objective account to examine the infamous murder and the events that unfolded in its wake.
Paula Moore is the former executive assistant to the president of New Mexico State University. She is coauthor of One Man’s Word: A Seven Decade Personal History.
Flint and Moore were honored at the Annual HSNM Awards Banquet at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on Saturday evening.
Additionally, UNM Press’s Pasó por Aquí Series on Nuevomexicano Literary Heritage received the 2009 State Historian’s Award for Excellence in New Mexico Heritage Scholarship from the state Cultural Properties Review Committee (CPRC). Committed to publishing new fiction and poetry by contemporary Hispanic New Mexican writers and to recovering the Nuevomexicano literary tradition of the past four centuries, the Pasó por Aquí Series was recognized by the Office of the State Historian for its scholarly research, writing and editing that has led to important insights into New Mexico’s cultural history. The series editors accepted the award at the CPRC’s 37th annual Heritage Preservation Awards Ceremony at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on Saturday afternoon.

voices of the Southwest Lecture Series

EVENT INFO
WHAT: Voices of the Southwest lecture #1
WHO: Anne Weaver, author of The Voyage of the Beetle, talks about evolution.
DATE/TIME: September 3, 2008, 7pm.
WHERE: National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque.

Anthropologist Anne Weaver Kicks Off Voices of the Southwest at National Hispanic Cultural Center

ALBUQUERQUE, NM-On September 3, 7pm, award-winning author Anne Weaver will be the first speaker in the recently resurrected Voices of the Southwest lecture series at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. An hour-long talk will precede a question-and-answer period and book signing.

Weaver's book, THE VOYAGE OF THE BEETLE, explores Charles Darwin's "mystery of mysteries" by taking young readers on a scientific ride that helps answer the questions of why so many different species exist on Earth and why each is uniquely fitted for its environment.

Weaver, who graduated from UNM with a Ph.D. in anthropology, will talk about teaching evolution. She has taught at Santa Fe Community College and will continue her quest to make evolution accessible with a book on hominid children through time, forthcoming from UNM Press. Weaver's The Voyage of the Beetle won the New Mexico Press Women's 2008 Zia Award for best children's book and will also be the New Mexico State Library's selection to represent the state at the National Book Festival in Washington DC September 27.

Voices of the Southwest was begun in 2003 by then UNM Associate Provost Dr. David Stuart, in conjunction with UNM Press. Employing UNM Press authors, the series has covered a broad range of topics-from New Mexico history and culture to world archaeology to literature and poetry-and proven a forum for the public to mingle with recognized authors and learn about a specific subject. KUNM will simulcast the lectures on 89.9FM and online at www.kunm.org. For more information about the Voices of the Southwest or to view the complete lineup, visit www.unmpress.com or contact Christina Frain at 505-272-7183 or cfrain@unm.edu.
