Shoes for Santo Niño Reviewed in NM Magazine

The Shoes for the Santo Niño, written by Peggy Pond Church with illustrations by Charles M. Carrillo, was reviewed in New Mexico Magazine.
New Mexico Magazine says:
"In the Roman Catholic tradition, and particularly among Hispanic and Native American Catholics in northern New Mexico, Santo Niño (the Christ child) is thought to heal children. Figurines of the saint are believed to leave church altars at night to visit ailing children—the devout leave children’s shoes at his shrines to ensure that he can continue his travels. In this story, Julianita, the youngest of 11 siblings, diligently crafts a pair of shoes for Santo Niño. Unlike he family, Julianita believes that the saint departs the church not to help children, but to gambol about the countryside—just as she dearly wishes she could do herself. Once Julianita delivers the shoes, Santa Niño springs to life, and together the two explore the llano (plains), in this magical tale rich in cultural significance. Tales such as this have been shared among New Mexican families for centuries, and this one is well worth picking up so that your own family can continue the tradition. Originally written in the 1930s by famed New Mexico author Peggy Pond Church, probably best known for The House at Otowi Bridge: The Story of Edith Warner and Los Alamos (University of New Mexico Press, 1959), Shoes for the Santo Niño was lost for almost seven decades. Here it is brought back to life with watercolor illustrations by Santa Fe santero Charles M. Carrillo. Recommended for children five to seven." -- May 2010

Word Harvest Doin's for Summer

We are delighted to host award-winning author and writing teacher Sandi Ault in a special workshop this summer. In "Six Degrees of Separation: From Creating Story Lines to Polishing Your Work - Important Skills A Writer Must Have," Sandi presents vital information writers need to stand out from the pack and succeed as published authors. Sandi will help you sharpen writing skills to develop a dynamic voice; create powerful images with your words; interweave and fine-tuning themes; set your story line and grab the reader; use polishing tools to distinguish your writing; and describe your work to make it easy to sell and market. Sign up now before the class fills! To learn more
If you want to know what it's like to study with Sandi, take a look at the guest blog by Pat Wood, one of Sandi's students at the 2008 Hillerman Conference.
Sandi's WILD INFERNO was a finalist at the recent Colorado Book Awards. The July issue of Women of Writing Magazine and the September issue of Cowboys & Indians both feature Ault. C&I also reviews WILD SORROW. (The same magazine will have an interview with Anne Hillerman about her newest book, Santa Fe Flavors: Best Restaurants and Recipes.)
Ellen Barone recently received the Travel Blissful Blog Award which she posted on her website. She notes, "By now, most businesses (yes, freelancers you ARE a business) realize that there are advantages to having a company website and blog. But, if you're like a lot of the people I meet, you may feel a bit confused, overwhelmed, puzzled and even frustrated by the world of new media and the Internet. You want to spend your time creating, not building a website or navigating Facebook, Twitter or Linked-In. Here's where I come in: I not only understand the new technology, I ENJOY it!"
Ellen will talk about how to use the web to jumpstart new sources of revenue or parlay your interests into creative new platforms during her Santa Fe workshop on Internet marketing on August 7. Space is still available in this interactive class, co-sponsored by Santa Fe Community College. The workshop is intended for writers, photographers, artists, entrepreneurs, and any one curious about websites, internet marketing and other on-line promotional tools.

BOOK FIESTA IN SANTA FE — NO COST TO PARTICIPATE!!!

The New Mexico Book Co-op and Clear Light Publishers in Santa Fe are banding together to organize two special book selling opportunities in Santa Fe.

Clear Light Publishers has graciously offered to host two events in Santa Fe at their new Clear Light Book Gallery on West San Mateo for the Book Awards Winners & Finalists and a book Fiesta for everyone. Please read rules carefully; space is limited so act fast. Clear Light Book Gallery is located at 851 West San Mateo (next to Open Hands). They have 3,000 square feet of display space available for us.

JANUARY 31, 2009 -- Winners & Finalists Book Fiesta
On January 31, 2009, there will be an event for Winners & Finalists in the 2008 Book Awards.

FEBRUARY 21, 2009 — Book Fiesta for Everyone
On February 21, 2009, they will have a Book Fiesta for anyone.

FREE, but you must help in promotion. There will be no cost to participate in either event. If you wish to participate you must send the email addresses of at least 25 of your potential customers (who might come to the events) in the Santa Fe area (40 email addresses if you want to participate in both events) and send these addresses to info@nmbookcoop.com. The New Mexico Book Co-op will handle the publicity for the events and will send out email announcements to people to encourage people to attend.

The events will be 10am-4pm and you are asked to be there by 9:30am to set up. No tear-down is allowed before 4pm. Each participant will have 1/2 of a table (two people to a table); if you have more than 10 titles, arrangements can be made for a larger space. A participant may bring other books as well Participation will be on a first-come basis, until space is gone. Tables will be provided for both events. You don’t have to bring tables. Participants get 75% of all book sales; 25% will go to Clear Light for handling all sales. Clear Light will handle the cash register and credit card processing. Checks for sales will be sent out a week after the event. Books must be marked with price (we highly advise removable labels that are available at stores like Staples and Office Max).

ANOTHER BOOK DISPLAY OPPORTUNITY
Clear Light Book Gallery has just re-opened in its new location on San Mateo Street in Santa Fe and is interested in having a display of New Mexico books from the Book Award Winners and from the recent New Mexico Book Catalog. They cannot guarantee sales so they want a single copy of each winner and catalog book to display on a consignment basis. If they get interested buyers, they will order more from you. Clear Light Book Gallery features children’s books, cookbooks, Native American, Hispanic, Southwest & Holistic books, and Southwest gift items. If you are interested in participating in this display please contact Harmon Houghton at 505/989-9590.
