Dear Subscribers:
This very, very short newsletter is dedicated to mothers everywhere.
Being a mother is very different now than it was when I was a child. Now, because of the boomer generation, more and more mothers are also grandmothers, great grandmothers, even great, great grandmothers. We’re often part of the sandwich generation meaning we’re taking care of our own children and also our mothers and fathers, often ailing. Many of us are juggling two careers (or more!) if we’ve chosen to work outside the home as well as take care of that home ourselves. We partner more with husbands or partners who are sharing responsibilities that once were only under the purview of the mom - of - the - house.
But moms are still the same in many ways. We are still often the fixers, the worriers, the most caring of caretakers. This is a year when moms may need more tender care than they’ve been given in the past.
The trouble is, the traditional ways don’t seem quite right this year.
Flowers seem very frivolous for households on a budget. I’ve always felt sad when I must throw away wilted blooms. Candy sure is yummy, but it is not the perfect choice for many who are diabetic, hypoglycemic or working on slimming their hips. The beautiful cards at CVS often don’t say the rig ht thing or don’t reflect our mothers’ personalities. After all, we’re not all that sentimental, syrupy kind of mom the pastel cards seem; we may resort to humor which then doesn’t reflect our feelings.
The answer is a book of poetry. One that reflects many aspects of motherhood and all the relationships surrounding it. Mom won’t expect all the poems to fit your relationship with her; instead she’ll get to reflect on motherhood in general and choose the passages that have special meaning for her. Those may reflect ways she relates to her own mother, reflect the ways she relates to you, or maybe even open a subject you should have talked about with her long ago.
Magdalena Ball and I have written such a chapbook of poetry for mothers with photos by May L. Lattanzio. The title comes from one of my wistful poems, “She Wore Emerald Then . . .” We hope you’ll consider ordering it for your mother from Amazon. They’ll ship fast and you can give it alone or slip it into a the box filled with a pashmina scarf, a pair of silver - tone earrings, and appreciation from thou!
Find it at www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook .
Here is one of the poems from it:
Wishing to Be a Child Again
She goes too long
in the telling of a story.
Gutters between her brows
make her angry
even when she's not.
If I had know then
I would not have looked so hard,
have listened for the sweet
notes, ignored how on and on she went
I would have loved what I had.
And here is the cover of that book in colors Mom will love: [See the .pdf copy for a picture of the book cover or go directly to www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook.]
It is from our Celebration Series of chapbooks. A new concept in poetry chapbooks, as nearly as I can tell.
Happy Writing and Promoting,
Carolyn Howard - Johnson

Maida Tilchen's News
I'm very pleased to announce that "Land Beyond Maps has won the Arizona Book Publishing Association Award in the Gay/Lesbian category. It was also a Finalist in the Multicultural category. The website is http://azbookpub.com/onews/aba-2010-winners/
"Land Beyond Maps is a Finalist for two more awards:
- Lambda Literary Foundation "Lammy" in the Lesbian Debut category, which will be announced May 27.
- Golden Crown Literary Society in the "Dramatic General Fiction" category, which will be announced June 5.
Also, with the confidence of all these awards, I am going to try to fulfill a lifelong dream by applying for residencies at the MacDowell and Yaddo colonies. The applications require reference letters from people with high credibility in literature or writing or with generally high professional standing, and who also know me or would be willing to get to know me well enough to attest that I would be "temperamentally suitable" to stay at a writer's residency. If you feel you are appropriate and would be willing to write the reference, or if you can suggest someone, please let me know.

Create Compelling Characters and Dynamic Dialog
Margaret Coel's latest mystery
Who are those people in your head? And what are they saying? Author Margaret Coel will help you get to know the characters in your imagination and transport them into your story. You will learn how to give characters distinct personalities, viewpoints, and motivations that will make them come alive on the page. Coel will show how dialog is a crucial devise to transform characters into multi-dimensional people--and keep the story moving. Using non-intimidating, hands-on practice, she will help students learn to write dialog that feels like conversation and develop techniques that allow characters to act, react, suffer, change, prevail and, finally, live on in the minds of the reader.
The New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Wind River mystery series, Margaret Coel sets her stories among the Arapahos on Wyoming's Wind River Reservation. Her novels have won many awards and been on numerous bestseller lists including the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. Among her honors are five Colorado Book Awards and the Rocky Award for Best Mystery Novel set in the American West, presented at the Left Coast Crime Conference.
As Requested: Manuscript Reviews
Editor Judith Van Gieson
Author. publisher and editor Judith Van Gieson has agreed to help aspiring authors refine their first chapters and improve their synopses. Judith will read a synopsis and up to 25 pages of the first chapter of the manuscripts and meet with writers privately during the conference to discuss their work, focusing on strenghts and on areas that could use some improvement. The offer is open to writers of both fiction and non-fiction and includes a written critique, a half-hour private session with Judith and a two-hour class on writing first chapters. June 1 Deadline for $10,000 Hillerman Prize
The Tony Hillerman Prize for best first mystery, created and co-sponsored by WORDHARVESTand St. Martin's Press, honors the memory of New Mexico author Tony Hillerman. The contest is open to previously unpublished book length manuscript (no less than 220 typewritten pages or approximately 60,000 words). The story must be set in the Southwestern United States and the author must be unpublished in the mystery genre. (Most self-published novels are allowed.) Entries must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2010. The complete guidelines and entry form are here. Good luck!
Successful Writing Tip:
Author Tony Hillerman often quipped that writer's block "was spelled L-A-Z-Y."
However, if a novel he had in the works stalled, he would drive out to the landscape where the story took place, usually the Navajo reservation. This emersion in the scene, and time away from the computer, usually reinvigorated his writing process. Try it yourself.
We'll be in touch with announcements about the conference and hope to have our next newsletter to you in mid-May. If something interesting has happened in your writing life, please send us your news with NEWS in the subject line. Photos are welcome, too. We'll try to include your news in our next issue or on our blog. Until then, happy writing!
Sincerely,
Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg
