SACRED FEMININE Featured in NM Magazine
Award-winning author Judith McLaughlin and her new book SACRED FEMININE are featured in a book review in New Mexico Magazine. McLaughlin won the 2009 New Mexico Book Awards in her category and won a 2010 New Mexico Press Women’s Award for Sacred Feminine. Sacred Feminine examines the role that culture, religion, sociology, art, and gender play in the development of religious, Santero art in New Mexico. McLaughlin also looks at images of women in sacred art in New Mexico.
New Mexico Magazine says:
"Ever since Spanish Colonial times, santos — the sacred folk-art figures depicting Roman Catholic saints that are the objects of daily prayer and community celebration in New Mexico—have helped carry on the faith in this rugged area. Although much research has been devoted to santos, the artists who make them (santeros), and the creation of these devotional figures, little attention has been paid to the role of feminine symbolism and iconography in this tradition. In Sacred Feminine, author Judith McLaughlin helps to remedy this oversight. She explores santeros’ depictions of Mary, the mother of Jesus and the key feminine figure in Catholic tradition, as well as how the glorification of these feminine figures affected the roles of women in Spanish Colonial society. To illustrate the concepts discussed, the book includes many photographs of santos, bultos, and retablos; however, McLaughlin fails to pinpont the connections between the specific pieces presented and the concepts she describes. Additionally, these pieces of religious folk art are presented in black-and-white, which doesn’t allow the reader to fully appreciate their colorful beauty. On the whole, however, Sacred Feminine — which won the 2009 New Mexico Book Award for Best Religious Book—is a fascinating look at this artistic tradition that both scholars and art fans will appreciate."--May 2010

Lisa Lenard-Cook News
I’ll be giving a talk about the writing of Dissonance at the Esther Bone Library in Rio Rancho tomorrow evening at 6:30, in conjunction with the ongoing Anne Frank exhibit at Coronado Mall. I understand a smaller exhibit has been set up at the library as well. The Esther Bone Library is located just off Southern, behind the Rio Rancho Post Office. I’ve posted a link on my website.

New Mexico Press women Looking for Female Fiction Writers
An outstanding New Mexican writer will be honored for her work in fiction next spring when her book receives the prestigious Zia Award.
Women writers living in the state are invited to submit their books for consideration for the award, given each year by the New Mexico Press Women at the annual spring conference. The 2010 conference will be held in Albuquerque, April 16-17.
The 2010 Zia Award will be given to the author of an outstanding book in fiction published in 2007, 2008 or 2009. The contest is open to novels, novellas and short story collections and to all genres.
Each year the award rotates to one of three categories: nonfiction, fiction and children’s literature. To accommodate this schedule, a book published in the last three years is eligible.
Submissions can be made by the author or by someone else on behalf of the author, such as a publisher. Membership in the association is not required, but the writer must be a woman. Authors must also live in the state or have a strong connection to New Mexico; however the book can be published anywhere. A $10 submission fee is required and helps to defray the costs of the award. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 11, 2010.
New Mexico Press Women is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women and exists to provide professional development, networking and First Amendment rights protection to professional journalists and communicators. For more information on the association, visit www.NewMexicoPressWomen.org.
The Zia Award was started by members in 1953 to honor an outstanding woman in New Mexico media.
Book entries are considered a donation to the organization and are not returned. The books will be part of the silent auction held at the annual spring awards banquet to raise scholarship funds.
To submit a book entry to the Zia Award contest please send a cover letter containing contact information and a paragraph stating the author’s connection to New Mexico, an email address or stamped postcard for acknowledgement of receipt, the book and a check for $10 payable to New Mexico Press Women to the following address postmarked by Jan. 11, 2010:
