Anne Hillerman
Greetings!
Santa Fe had touch of winter last week. Ski Santa Fe is open and the twinkle lights shine from the trees on the Plaza. A great time to hunker down and get that writing project finished before the year ends.
Thanks again to everyone who made the 2011 Hillerman Writers Conference such a success. To see a snapshot of this year's conference, watch this video.
For 2012, we are considering adding a Bulletin Board section to our website and a sponsor section to our e-newsletters where editors and perhaps authors could buy an ad or listing to let our readers know about their services and/or books. Please let us know what you think of the idea and if you might be interested in participating.
Hillerman Prize and Hillerman Short Story Contests
Thanks to both partners, St. Martin's Press and New Mexico Magazine for agreeing to work with us again in 2012. The deadline for manuscripts for the Hillerman Prize is June 1.
The deadline for the short story contest is September 15. You'll find the guidelines for both contests here.
Please help us spread the word to other writers' groups, reading clubs, college writing classes and individuals who might be interested.
Hoffer Award seeks entries
The 2012 Eric Hoffer Award is open to academic, independent, small press, and self-published books that were released or copyrighted in the last two years. (Books more than two years old may enter the Legacy Fiction or Legacy Nonfiction categories.) Deadline is Jan. 21, 2012. Find general information here.
New Mexico Press Woman Awards open for entries
Women who live in New Mexico or have a strong connection to the state, and published non-fiction book over the past three years are invited to submit their books for consideration for the Zia Award. The contest is open to all subgenres of nonfiction, from memoir to textbook. Submissions can be made by the author or by someone else on her behalf, such as a publisher. The book may have been published anywhere. To be eligible to receive the award, selected winners must be available to read from their work at the award luncheon during the 2012 New Mexico Press Women conference May 4-6 in Santa Fe.
Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.
New Mexico Press Women also welcome books of many genres, by men and women, in the annual Communications Contest.
2012 Hillerman Writers Conference: Save the date
We are pleased to announce that the conference will be back at Hotel Santa Fe in Santa Fe, N.M. Save the dates: November 8-10, 2012. According to evaluations, there's demand to learn more about the mysterious and potentially lucrative world of e-books. That topic is on our radar, along with an opportunity for newly published authors to introduce themselves and their books, and a re-formatted edition of "Writing with the Stars."
Video from the conference including interviews with attendees and writing tips from our faculty, will soon be on our website and our Facebook page. Take a look. Thanks to Ashley M. Biggers for doing the interviews and creating these movies. Watch for our WORDHARVEST channel soon on You Tube.
We want to give a big thanks to Laureen Pepersack who runs the conference bookstore. Her calm demeanor and organizational skills are key to our success. We couldn't do it without her.
Also thanks to Felicia Lujan for such nice mentions of the conference on her blog. You can read all about it here.
Warm wishes for the holiday season,
Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg

Next Meeting—Holiday Party
Next lunch meeting of the New Mexico Book Co-op is Friday, December 16. 2011, at the Golden Corral on Alameda & Coors in Albuquerque. It is no host, no program but we will talk. Come as early as 11am.
Hats off to Florentin Smarandache
We have said it many times – the New Mexico Book Awards are for you to make something of it. Florentin Smarandache has had info of his award go to people all over the world and UNM has a story about him on their website. We like to see someone go full tilt. He is a math/physics professor and his natural inclination is to promote. If it is good for math people you should take something from his playbook!
Speaking of the New Mexico Book Awards
We are asking all Co-op members to think of someone who would like to judge in the New Mexico Book Awards next year. We will start sending out books to judges in February. They have at least two months to read their books, have a one sided score sheet to fill out on each book, and can pick the categories and the number of books they like. If you have someone in mind email us with their email. We anticipate that there will be more entries in 2012. We take care of getting them books and picking up books. There is no compensation for judges but if we are able they can request books they like and we will give them their choices.
Need Your Feedback
The Arizona Book Publisher’s Association has gone out of business and will cease all operation before December 31, 2011. This means that the major book award program in Arizona will cease as well. We think it is a shame and want to invite them to enter our Book Awards. If this happens we will have to rename the Book Awards to reflect their involvement. We would also create some categories just for Arizona publishers and authors and keep ones for just New Mexicans. Our schedule would stay the same. If they get back on their feet they can reclaim their awards. This may give our awards even greater visibility since we are covering two states. What do you think? Email us ASAP so we can make a decision. Timing is good for us.

News from Carolyn Howard Johnson
USA BOOK NEWS ANNOUNCES
WINNERS AND FINALISTS OF
THE USA “BEST BOOKS 2011” AWARDS
Simon & Schuster, St. Martin’s Press, Random House, Penguin, Harper Collins, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons and hundreds of Independent Houses contribute to this year’s Outstanding Competition!
________________________________________
LOS ANGELES – USABookNews.com, the premiere online magazine and review website for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced two of Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s books were among those that placed in THE USA “BEST BOOKS 2011” AWARDS on November 1, 2011. Awards were presented for titles published in 2010 and 2011.
Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USA Book News, said this year’s contest yielded an unprecedented number of entries. Winners and finalists traversed the publishing landscape: Simon & Schuster, St. Martin’s Press, Random House, Penguin, Harper Collins, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons and hundreds of independent houses contributed to this year’s outstanding competition. Keen adds, “Our success begins with the enthusiastic participation of authors and publishers and continues with our distinguished panel of industry judges who bring to the table their extensive editorial, PR, marketing, and design expertise.”
Award highlights include the following:
(Full results listing available on USABooknews.com)
• The Frugal Book Promoter: How to get nearly free publicity on your own or partnering with your publisher (Second Edition) by Carolyn Howard-Johnson won best business book in the writing category.
• Blooming Red: Christmas Poetry for the Rational by Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Magdalena Ball was a finalist in the poetry category.
• Prodigal Father Pagan Son: Growing Up Inside the Dangerous World of the Pagans Motorcycle Club by Anthony Menginie and Kerrie Droban (St. Martin's Press) was honored in the “Autobiography/Memoirs” category
• Oprah: A Biography by Kitty Kelley (Crown Books/Random House) was awarded “Best Biography"
• Perfect One-Dish Dinners: All You Need for Easy Get-Togethers by Pam Anderson (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) placed number one in “Cookbooks”
• The Daughter's Walk by Jane Kirkpatrick (Water Brook/Random House) took home the “Best General Fiction” prize
One reviewer said reading Howard-Johnson’s books is like picking the brains of a master marketer. It received plaudits from industry shakers like Marilyn Ross, founder of Small Publishers or North America and Tim Bete, director of Dayton University’s Erma Bombeck Writers’ Conference. The new one carries endorsements from the likes of Dan Poynter and Tony Eldridge.
Howard-Johnson, an instructor for nearly a decade at UCLA Extension’s Writers’ Program, chose to have the new edition published in both e-book format and paperback in order to give her struggling students and clients affordable and convenient choices. Whichever format a reader chooses, The Frugal Book Promoter assures an author’s book the best possible start in life. Full of nitty-gritty how-tos for getting nearly free publicity, the author shares her professional experience as well as practical tips gleaned from the successes of her own book campaigns. A former journalist and publicist (she wrote media releases for fashion designers like Christian Dior), she tells authors how to do what their publishers can’t or won’t and why authors can often do their own promotion better than a PR professional. Her poetry is published in dozens of literary and review journals worldwide.
USABookNews.com is an online publication providing coverage for books from mainstream and independent publishers to the world online community. JPX Media Group, in Los Angeles, California, is the parent company of USABookNews.com.

Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts Win Award
LOCAL PUBLISHERS HONORED WITH INAUGURAL HILLERMAN LEAPHORN AWARD
Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts of Los Ranchos, New Mexico, will receive the inaugural Leaphorn Award at the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference in Santa Fe, November 12, at the Hotel Santa Fe. The Award is named after Tony Hillerman’s legendary Navajo detective, Joe Leaphorn.
“We are honored to present the first Leaphorn Award to Awalt and Rhetts for their generous efforts to call attention to the world of literary talent in New Mexico,” Anne Hillerman said. “Just as Joe Leaphorn never gave up on a case, Paul and Barbe continue to work tirelessly to help our state’s writers and publishers receive the recognition they deserve.”
Awalt and Rhetts are the owners of LPD Press/Rio Grande Books and founders of the New Mexico Book Co-op with over 1,000 members. LPD Press/Rio Grande Books is a regional publisher and one of the biggest independent publishers in New Mexico. They specialize in New Mexico titles and authors. Awalt and Rhetts have won many awards for their books and work including the 2006 Laureates for the Mother Teresa Award. That year the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Dalai Lama were also recognized.
Awalt and Rhetts have also received awards for their magazine Tradicion Revista now available online. They have also received awards from the Public Relations Society of America and the National School Public Relations Association. Their books have received awards from the Border Regional Library Association, Pima/Tucson Library Association, New Mexico Press Women, and the New Mexico Book Awards. They annually present awards for New Mexican Hispanic art at the New Mexico State Fair and Contemporary Hispanic Market.
The New Mexico Book Co-op formed the New Mexico Book Awards five years ago and recognizes New Mexico books published each year. The New Mexico Book Co-op, the largest book advocacy organization in New Mexico, has promoted literacy projects, libraries, schools, New Mexico magazines and newspapers, as well as New Mexico books and New Mexico authors. Activities have included book fairs, a store in Cottonwood Mall, special events, and workshops, while the Book Co-op survives and grows with no dues. The New Mexico Book Co-op has published its’ first book Voices of New Mexico commemorating New Mexico’s Centennial with 35 contributors and the book is a Finalist in the New Mexico Book Awards. This year the Book Co-op also instituted Nuevo Books - a book publishing service for authors.
Awalt and Rhetts are particularly pleased with the Award because the books of Tony Hillerman helped them make the decision to move from Maryland to New Mexico, 22 years ago. Joe Leaphorn has always been one of their favorite characters and epitomizes the drive of New Mexicans
The Award will be presented as part of the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference and Workshop at the annual banquet.
